Sunday Homily: Most of us have had that feeling, when something goes very wrong, to say, "Hey God, why are You letting this bad stuff happen to me?" Or more seriously, when a person seriously thinks that they or someone else must have done something disgusting so that all this bad stuff comes on them because of His Wrath. An interesting idea....but its not Christianity.

Christians believe that when Christ died on the Cross, that act opened the door to forgiveness of sin. ...That means all of our sins can be forgiven because the Cross is more powerful than any sin. To say that God is somehow really steamed and is punishing us again....is to make a mockery of the Cross.

In today's Gospel, we hear these words: "Some people told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their sacrifices. Jesus said to them in reply, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all other Galileans? By no means!" The Galileans did not get killed because they were great sinners - they got killed because Pilate was one nasty dude.

We still need to repent our sins, of course, if we want to be free of them and their eternal consequences. But to say that person XYZ got trounced in this life because they were too sinful...is barbaric and it robs the Cross of Christ of its power.

Sunday Homily: Today's passage is the Transfiguration of Christ, one of the few miracles that is recounted in three of the Gospels and is mentioned in the fourth. It is one of the very unusual passages in the New Testament where God the Father speaks aloud to His Only Begotten Son. It is a rare view into the eternal of of the Most Holy Trinity.

But there is a message for all of us and especially those in families. Your children need your praise and encouragement. Your sp...ouse, grandchildren and any subordinates at work need to be recognized for their good work. In my life on earth, I have had a great many bosses - some of them knew me and what my concerns were, and some could not recognize me on the street. I will let you guess which ones I and others worked harder for.

God the Father knew that His Son needed nothing, but yet He still recognized, honored and spoke directly with Jesus on this earth. His Voice was very clear, "This is my beloved Son, listen to Him" If God the Father takes a moment to publicly honor His Son, how much more should we follow His example and give praise to the people we live and work with.

Sunday homily: today's Gospel Scripture passage is the story of the temptation of Christ in the desert. The evil one tempts Jesus three times. These are: To eat illicit food to gratify the flesh, to Idolatry in exchange for political power and the temptation to misuse His Divine power for mere fame

Jesus temptations were just as real to Him as our temptation is to us. But look how He overcomes all the temptations by reciting Scripture at every one. When you are tempted to sin..., steel you resolve by reading the Bible. Blow the dust off of it and see what God has to say to you.

This Lent...consider choosing one book of Scripture and study it very hard each day of Lent. Read it slowly each day. Make that book your own. I promise you, it will come in handy.
