You will be welcomed by Ariani (managing director) and you will enjoy the superlative service & warm hospitality of her 20+ Balinese colleagues & friends - including Ngurah John (manager), Tia (reception), Uni & Ayu (food & beverage), Dek Pur & Luh (chef), Ketut (maintenance) and Tom (IT), among others.
The money you spend here will do much good to help support the local village community.
And the time you spend here will be priceless.
So what is one thing that is especially special about Sahaja Sawah Resort (other than their superb staff and world class resort facilities)?
It's their location!!!
This winter, we find ourselves paying homage to the ruins of the iconic Acropolis in Athens; soaking in spectacular sunsets from the outdoor jacuzzi of our whitewash villa perched by the edge of the caldera in stunning Santorini; gently cruising along the Nile River exploring Eqyptian antiquity; and staying a month at Sahaja Sawah Resort completely surrounded north, south, east and west by miles and miles of verdant green rice terraces on Asia's #1 island destination: beautiful Bali.
Originally built in 2010 by Dutch owner/philantropist/humanitarian/developer/entrepreneur Bernard van Elmpt, Sahaja Sawah (meaning "only rice fields") was subsequently completely renovated in 2014 and it is without doubt one of the most surprisingly pleasurable places to stay at for an authentic rural Balinese experience.
All the popular tourist hotspots in Bali - from Uluwatu to Nusa Dua, Kuta, Seminyak, Ubud and Kintamani - can easily be covered with a couple of well-planned day trips from using this (seemingly) remote resort as your homebase.
When staying at Sahaja Sawah Resort, be sure to also include a day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Jatiluwih Rice Terraces nearby and Pura Ulun Danu Beratan ... both stunningly cinematic locations!!
If you relish the joy & freedom of driving on your own - just as we do - book an APV ahead of time before arriving in Bali (to arrange for a vehicle rental pickup at the airport) and plot a course through the highlands from the resort to Pupuan, Bubunan, Lovina, Singaraja, Gitgit and Danau Beratan for an amazingly exhilarating road trip of a lifetime!
For very competitive vehicle rental rates and trustworthy reputation, do a search for BaliCarFinder.
Here is another tip: save up to 50% by booking with Sahaja Sawah Resort for longer term stays.
HAVE A FANTASTIC TIME!!!

Amazing place to live. Surrounded by lovely neighbours and professional staff.

unfortunately, i can only give 1 star for this place, and only for the view
my stay at Sahaja Resort was disappointing from various reasons. i would not recommend this place because:
1. ITS FAR FROM ANY TOURISTIC PLACE - even if stated 10,15,20km - with the traffic in Bali , 20km you travel in 40-45 mins at its best
2. No decent supermarket in the area - villas are located in a village and to get to a supermarket , you have to travel 30-40 mins on scooter/ car.
3. i gave my shot with the food at their restaurant- i tried eating 3 times, i felt stomach sick 3 times ( also there’s no other restaurant in the area )
4. Sahaja Resort doesnt look like in the pictures - its decent but definitely not luxury - old furniture, no carpets like in the pictures and no baldacchinos - like shown in pictures
5. MAJOR insects problems! - its nature, but the number of frogs, snakes, ants and LIZZARDS is just ridiculous, they don’t do a proper sanitation regarding those - we were told there were loud lizzards we have to live with.
6. the lizzards - gekko are called- basically do their needs in one of the bedroom and to get our sheets cleaned , we were charged for that
7. i don’t find it safe regarding things - at the end of our trip, we calculated with receipts money we spent and we had missing some rupiahs and 100$ we didn’t noticed at beginning - also, a necklace was missing from the safe box
The stuff was always nice and helpful but in conclusion the only good thing about Sahaja is the nice view and the pool.
Below i posted real photos about how this place looks like.

Gorgeous place in the countryside, quite isolated from civilisation but only 10 minutes away from a completely deserted beach of black sand.

We enjoyed staying at this beautiful resort! The resort is beautifully located in the middle of rice terraces. It's the perfect place to relax and enjoy a quite stay in Bali.
The staff is very helpful and friendly. It was the perfect place to enjoy the real authentic Bali. The staff even invited us to join their ceremonies and introduced us with the Balinese culture. It was an amazing experience.
Thanks to Adriani, Bernard and all the other staff. We will come back for sure!

We had an incredible 8 nights at Sahaja, and only wish we could have spent more time!
- The staff are incredibly lovely and make you feel most welcome.
- The villa is superb and very much as described and pictured. Close to the resort amenities, but you still feel very secluded with plenty of privacy.
- The retreat offers shuttles to the larger towns (15-30 mins away), and we loved going there for dinner at the night market street stalls.
- For us, what made the trip was the location. The retreat is quite literally in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the most traditional of Bali villages (and a 10 minute scooter ride from a deserted black sand beach). If you want to be close to partying and Western restaurants, this place isn't for you. However, if you're looking to get a taste for traditional Bali life whilst still staying in comfort, it's perfect. We enjoyed walking and riding the motorbike around the local villages and would head down the road to the Warung Ayu for lunch. Much of the staff (all?) at Sahaja are locals in the villages, and it's quite cool to know you're supporting them with your stay and in shopping / eating in the local warungs as well as at the resort.
We can't wait to return!

Best place to stay with family and specially kids. Beautiful view and good service. One disadvantage is the resort is far away from city, however its least matters if you are going for relaxation.

We have only been here two days, but already we want to leave a 5 star review! The location, the atmosphere, the staff, the people, the food, the drink, the views, the beds, the pool, Bernard, the bikes, the ATV, the EVERYTHING is first class.
If you are coming to Bali with your family, this is the only place you need to come to

Staying in Sahaja Sawah is the best travel experience we have ever had. Here you leran how to smile again - non-stop:).
Starting with the excellent communications with Ariani who answered all our questions to feeling like staying at the middle of a postcard, because its just so picturesque and authentic!
The apartement is located in a NON-profit resort (could you belive that one exists!!?) - when we heard about this, we were absolutely blown away because all the money they make, goes straight into supproting local people to educate their kids and support the families.
The hosts are so hospitable and thoughtful that there is no way to rate the stay less than 5 stars.
Our favourite moments include late nigh chats with everybody at the reception lounge, looking at stars while swimming in the pool at night and observing how real balinese live their unobstructed day-by-day lives.
It is a perfect venue for a super relaxing family vacation. Kids can run arond the property, meeting and playing with other international kids. While we where there, Bernard, the owner of our unit, built a baby playground right next to a lounge area - what a perfect setup!
This is a truly a hidden gem at the middle of rice fields with an amazing ocean view from the balcony. I wish I could take the view with me and have it forever.
There are so many qualities to list, that I could go on and on: pool and play toys, super safe surroundings, daily cleaning, list of authentic Balinese experiences to book a fun activity with kids.I personally loved HGTV and English news channels :D - you dont get this in many Airbnb houses.
The family vacation could not be any better with altering pool days with pottery, temple visits, Tanah Lot (only 40 minutes from there!) and shopping in the markets.
They do amazing Christmas and New Years parties that blowed our minds!
After visiting Sahaja Sawah, we can truly say we have been visiting the real, authentic Bali while staying in super comfortable housing and people who are now our lifelong friends! Miss you all very dearly!
