My wife and I had a 5 Star experience at K'DongDing Cooking School today. I must admit I was initially reluctant about going into someone's "home" for a cooking class; but it proved to be the standout feature of our Bali visit.
This is not just a cooking class; it's a veritable Balinese cultural crash course: visiting a 600 year-old multi-generational family compound that is home to a charming and enterprising family. The communal lifestyle shared by the family is a class unto itself.
We began our cooking excursion by visiting the Pasar Umum Payangan Organic Market and were introduced to Balinese vegetables, fruits, chiles and so much more. Our guide / instructor took plenty of time to explain the ingredients that would be integrated into our menu.
We proceeded to the cooking venue and toured the home; we visited the family shrine; chatted with the Aunts that assisted in the food prep; and then got down to business. I didn't expect the professional cooking facility that we found. It would hold up to classes I have taken at Sur La Table.
We diligently proceeded with a painstaking review of the ingredients, the step by step food prep, chopping and cooking and ended up with a meal better than any I had at my very nice hotel. It was terrific fun, we met very nice people and will not only have plenty of pictures to share, but a delicious rainy day cooking project when I get home.
I wholeheartedly recommend this experience; it's an extraordinary value.

Amazing educational and entertaining experience! The food was fantastic and the whole family are so friendly and welcoming. A great little insight into the life and culture of a Balinese family. Would recommend to everyone!

The beauty of the cooking class workshop, their 600 year old family house and community, the host who is an excellent teacher and will be able to explain you how to cook Balinese food, and the cute house monkey, this workshop was amazing. The host also explained local culture, history, agriculture. Just amazing!

My girlfriend and I did the cooking class a couple weeks ago and I do not know where to start. The people were amazing! So nice, so helpful and really treated us like family. The food we cooked was fresh and delicious. We were brought to the local fresh market, showed around the family house and learned about Balinese food, culture and history. I can not say enough about this! Was the best overall experience in Bali!

I have been traveling through Bali for almost two months and this has to be one of my favorite experiences so far. It is not just a cooking class, it is so much more. You get to a full culture experience. I have learned more from them than I have from anyone else. They will pick you up and drop you off from where you are staying! They were so kind and hands down the nicest people in the Ubud area. It was my boyfriends birthday and they went out of their way to make a cake and make us feel welcomed. I really love these guys!! If you are looking for a unique experience in Bali, you honestly need to do this!

What a special experience! Unlike most (if not all) cooking classes in Bali, with Kdongding you get to cook ALL of the 5 dishes yourself, in your own stove and cooking station. Because of this, you can then easily remake it at home, bc you've done everything! :) All of the menu is traditional Balinese food. You also do an extensive tour of a traditional market.
The classes take place inside Wayan and Nyoman's family complex, which means you also get to learn the structure of a traditional Balinese family complex. The cooking space is impeccably clean, spacious and fresh...and of course, everyone is warm and friendly, and they try to make it as enjoyable as possible! HIGHLY recommended.
