Extremely clean and nice space. Entire hostel has good aircon. Nice little communal sitting area. Free tea, coffee, and toast throughout the day. Breakfast had a lot of variety and was very good. Staff were nice and they can organize tours for you with 24hr reception. Only stayed for one night but would have stayed longer. Great spot

At first the place feelt little shady with only water in half of the toilet, some power outlets and the receptionist told me at the evening not to eat the nudels because it's from the morning. All the other guest was Chinese, nothing bad with it more than that could give you a hint of being at the wrong place.
Have been here for a couple of days now and I'm loving this place! Everything is clean and nicely run, both the staff and the guest are very friendly and there's good vibes here! You clean your own dishes, cloth and hand in the toilet sink. You share your fruits and snacks with the others and you get new Chinese friends! And the power failure is over the whole city, not just this hostel. The power comes and goes, if you're unlucky as me you could be without AC in a room with 10 others for two hours at the night. (And a bright emergency light)

The place is quite secluded next to the market. Semporna has many little children beggars. Although it may look dodgy at first and some of the locals will advice you against walking around the town at night due to very high crime rate. I did walked alone after dark and found kids digging through the dumpster for food and dogs everywhere. Garbage accumulated and the sea water is becoming dirty. Island backpackers is a very accommodating place as they provide simple breakfast and clean beds. I didn't even sleep on the bed instead slept on the sofa and yet the reception was kind enough not to force me back to the dorm beds. It's just the right place for a cheap clean affordable accommodation.
