Comfortable, well-equipped boats. Systematic operations. A nice, airy restaurant to relax in after your dives. Excellent chef and delicious Indonesian food.
Thalassa checks all the boxes for an excellent dive operator.
But that’s not what makes it stand out.
It is special in how it has become an integral part of the local community. The person at the heart of it all is the formidable-looking but gentle-hearted owner, Simone.
Simone has a remarkable life story of how she uprooted herself from the Netherlands to create a second life in Indonesia. I barely got an iceberg-tip’s worth of anecdotes in my few days of chatting with her and it is another tale to tell.
Fast forward to the resort today, it is the little things that clue you in on what a unique community Simone has helped build. We drove through the village with her daily and she could get no more than a couple hundred of metres before someone waves to her from their house or friendly-honks her from a motorbike or truck. At the resort, the staff are friendly, jovial and dedicated.
She’s not just another expat running a business that employs a few locals. She helped to set up and still teaches in the village school. She finds platforms for their award-winning musical group to perform. She deals with youth problems. She trains them up in different roles to work in the dive and hospitality sector. Many of her students and staff have gone on to other parts of Indonesia as dive masters/buddies/operators.
And she has yet bigger plans for her social enterprise.
Go there. To be inspired by the world class diving, the human spirit, and the sense of community.
I visited in April 2018

Picture perfect friendly resort with great diving. This place is a diver's paradise. The comfortable well shaded boats take you to sites where there are more varieties of coral and fish that you could see in a textbook on coral reefs. The staff on the boats do everything for you and the dive guides are great. On shore there are comfortable cabins to stay in and a large classy open walled dining area to enjoy the all included delicious meals, mostly buffet style. There are only a few downsides which relate to being in the tropics - a few mosquitoes here and there and it gets pretty hot and humid if you choose not to hang around in your air conditioned room all day. But with the fantastic views from the gazebo on the pier it's all worth it. We had a fantastic time.

The wifi is slow and only works in the lobby. And you need to login again every 10 minutes using a long and hard to enter wifi password.
3G signal doesn't work which means you can't even use mobile data.
Pool area is nice but there's 0 shade. Since this is resort is almost on the equator no shade is a total joke since you'll get burnt in a few minutes. No wonder no one uses the pool.
Lots of road noise. After paying $160 per night for a superior room and then listening to cars and motorbikes day and night it isn't relaxing
Staff are nice and this place has potential - they just need to fill in some missing dots like internet throughout the resort and shaded areas by the pool

Timetravel to the 90ies. Old and dusty restaurant, unsafe and not really welcoming pool area. Food is poor. Bar is more or less not there. The whole resort needs a renovation. The only good thing are the nice people there.

Last week, 4/12 to 4/19/2014, I stayed at the Thalassa Dive Resort with a group of 15 divers from the bay area of California. We went diving almost every day and without a doubt Simone and her staff really went out of their way to address our every need; indeed, the bungalows were clean and very comfortable and there was total quiet (the type of quiet one really appreciates after a day of diving). The dining room was very nice and gave everybody the opportunity to socialize and and generally have a wonderful time discussing the day's most wonderful diving.
I would not hesitate to stay at the Thalassa again in the future and not only to dive, but also to enjoy the beautiful gardens on the property and most of all to do laps in their great
100' swimming pool.

Super resort
