quite difficult to find a parking place here. for relatively cheap prices, and relativ goods can be sought. a little dirty.

well, every city must have traditional market located in the heart of the city itself, and in Malang it's called Pasar Besar. this traditional market sells almost everything, from food till furniture. what i like the most is the price, yes it's the lowest in town fellas. and the heritage for the building and it's surrounding also being a magnet to every traveller who comes to this city, or even to a colleger like me. everytime i go here, i always like to see the interaction between the customers and the sellers. it feels alive and different. just one message for everyone, don't bargain till the price drops really low, they also need money and maybe they only get 500 rupiah per piece of what they sell, be human enough before do the bargain :) if you can buy things from modern market, i know you can afford the traditional one. happy shopping!

The place which sells literally everything! You can get stuff even cheaper if you're good at bargaining (with javanese languange is a plus). It's good place for shopping, culinary seeking, even photo shooting. To find something can sometimes confusing since this place is so huge, so be more spesific what you're going to buy

Biggest market in town.
The building is old and the streets around it are busy.
Upon entry from the main entrance at Jl Pasar, clothes and garments are being sold.
As you walk deeper into the market vegetables are sold. Then only you will see fish and meat.
Around the perimeter of the inner market are dry items.
Upstairs are mostly clothing shops.
The market is slightly hot and the floor dirty.
There are lots of security personnel in this market and it looks like a security area.

It takes a lot and nothing much at all to make a great market. Simplicity, but a targeted simplicity. A state of being akin to that of the soul.

Malang Great Market
Pasar Besar Malang or Malang Great Market is located at Jalan Kyai Tamin, Sukoharjo, Klojen, Malang City, East Java 65118.
This market is the biggest traditional market in Malang. Although in the google map is located on Jalan Kyai Tamin, but residents of Malang city more familiarly call this market is located in Jalan Pasar Besar, Malang.
This market was once managed by private parties. Then, taken over by the Government of Malang in 1914 and rebuilt in 1919.
Beginning in 1914, this market was under the Government of Malang. Because of the large number of traders and the large amount of taxes that enter the government, finally in 1919 the market was rebuilt with more organized and modern. The cost of making this market is quite large and takes up to five years of workmanship and was completed in 1924.
This market expansion still has not been able to accommodate all traders and in the course of time, the number of traders who sell in the market more and more so that around 1932 until 1934, the Government of Malang City to build other markets to divert and reduce the number of traders in Pasar Besar Malang. The markets built include Bunul, Kebalen, Oro-Oro Dowo, Embong Brantas, and Lowokwaru.
After the Dutch East Indies era, there was a renovation in 1973 in this market. Malang big market is made 2 level. But the most drastic change was made when the market was made into a four-story after a big fire that occurred on the east side of the market in 1985.
In addition, Pasar Besar Malang comes with four floors. 1st and 2nd floor to accommodate the traditional market. 3rd Floor for Matahari Department Store and 4th floor for Matahari Wholesale Center. On the 3rd and 4th floors are also given parking facilities for two-wheeled vehicles and four wheels.
A major fire broke out again in 2003, a fire stemming from the 3rd floor of Matahari Department Store.
Judging from his long history in the history of Malang, this market is worth preserving. Unfortunately the management did not seem to care about the historic history of the market and lack of appreciation in the form of a truly professional management. For example, fires that repeatedly occur because the security system to prevent the occurrence of fire is not running properly.
We can also see on the 1st and 2nd floors of overcrowded renting rentals being pushed together just to increase local revenues that can actually be extracted from other sources. The drainage system for fish and meat traders and other organic merchandise is poorly maintained, although the market as usual smells bad, but if it comes to rotten smell will certainly reduce the convenience of us to shop on the 1st and 2nd floor.
While on the 3rd floor is special for Matahari Department Store. No problem. As for the 3rd floor as a wholesale center managed by the Matahari was not running properly, yet many stalls are just simply leased to small traders and not to wholesalers. So the existence of the fourth floor needs to be reviewed by the Government of Malang. Should not Matahari Department Store be moved to the 4th and 3rd floors to be used for traditional traders whose numbers are excessive on the 1st and 2nd floor.
The market police must also be activated in order to secure the market from the disturbances of the buskers and pickpockets. Proven pickpocketing events are still common to the mothers in particular and the pengamen or singers who roam the market environment is very disturbing the convenience of people who are shopping, especially when we are dining in restaurants contained in the market.
For all that I keep suggesting that this market is worth a visit if we want to shop for primary needs in traditional markets. And for tourist walkers this place is worth a visit viewed from the side of old history. But for the rating, I was forced to give a 4 star because of unprofessionality in its management.

Some day it will never be same again without Matahari Department Store. Car parking always charged 5K IDR on peak season without any receipt.
Rizki Hilmah Mahanani (10/06/2017 07:30)
It is a good place for buying a cheap stuff. You still can bargain the price :) 😉
Muhammad Fajar (29/03/2017 05:50)
Just another ordinary busy market, I guess. Less cozy for cheaper price, only if you are capable enough to bargain.

The most crowded market I've ever seen in Malang. Even morning, noon and until afternoon, this market is always crowded. While above this market, there is department store, Matahari.
Irene Susianto (17/07/2016 13:10)
It is the biggest traditional market in Malang city. You can find almost anything, from veggies, meat, fish, lots of traditional food, snacks, and many more. The shops around the market also sells anything from food, groceries, and almost everyting you need with very reasonable price. But in the market, you have to bargain sometimes to get the best price.
