Exhausting But Interesting Hiking
I do not have to repeat what thousands of other reviews had written about the journey from Sembalun to summit to lake to Senaru. It is the same path up and the same path down. Hence I will write about my opinion of the trip.
We had a 3D2N package with Rinjani Trekking Services in and we are in our 50's. Yes, it is a difficult trip. The morning climb to the summit is challenging. Read what others said about sliding one step back for every two steps taken. My area of vision was drastically reduced because of . The downward path is just as challenging. By the time we reached our campsite, toes, knees, legs are all aching. You do not have time to recover. After breakfast, the trip carries on. But this is one thing I prefer, which is more trekking after a sunrise climb. Unlike other places where you just do a sunrise climb and leave.
No worries on food and water. Besides the main meals, nice little things like chocolate bars, Pocari, Minute Maid orange and Gwere served by the operator. Sleep will also come as thick mattress and warm sleeping bags with pillows were provided too.
All these were possible because of the porters that carried them, for us. I truly respect them. In New Zealand, supplies are flown into Milford Track by helicopters. In Bhutan, donkeys were used. Here, it's them. Each carried two baskets full of rice, water, fruits, food, cooking and camping equipment, right down to toilet rolls, hung over their shoulders by a hard bamboo. We already had difficulty trekking up and down the mountain paths, some really treacherous paths, with less than 5kg back packs. Yet these porters can climb vertical rocks and even run down most paths with the loads, 50kg at the least, WEARING SLIPPERS!!! Yes, they are paid, but I wouldn't want to climb up and down the mountain even if I'm paid. Please try this trip to see if you wish you get paid.
Hence, to our fellow holiday makers, please tip them generously. You will be comfortable on your trip, but do not forget who is working hard to make you comfortable. I was happy that they have a job whenever tourists climb, but it woul
