i arrived at the hostel without reservation and in the middle of the night, due to the fact that the ferry from larantuka arrives in kupang at an awkward time. - no problem at all. edwin, the owner, welcomed me, offered me something to drink and a comfy bed in the dorm to sleep.
edwins place is highly recommended by lonely planet. have a look at his website. its also full with information about the island and public transport.
on some booking pages his place is listed as booked out. this is not true! contact him directly! everything on his homepage!
the hostel has a four bed dorm with comfortable beds, also the option with ac. plus two private rooms. the dorm beds are very cheap! even including breakfast - yummy banana pancake and delicious coffee. other good food is also available all day, as well as beer, water, coffee, tea. (nice chicken with bbq sauce, mie and nasi goreng as well of course) theres a guy walking in every day with very cheap fresh coconuts also.
the shower is good and clean, in one of the private rooms is a hot shower.
free wifi, laundry service, books, motorbike and car rental available.
close to the city beach, close to the night market.
edwin is a very nice guy, caring, tries to help with everything.
if you are in kupang dont miss out to visit the inland of timor. its beautiful and still very remote! edwin can help you to find a guide, which you wont need for everything but can be helpful or necesary in some of the villages. especially for the language.
climb gunung mutis! there is a place to stay up in the mountains (fatumnasi).
VISA INFORMATION
my purpose to come here was to renew my visa in timor leste. i tried to find out in the internet about the procedure, but there isn't too much information about it. edwin knows a lot! so if you need help just come here and he will help. or write him a message even before your stay.
(i ended up getting my visa way easier than i thought it would be. i went on a trip with a guide and simply crossed the border in oecusse, a little exclave of timor leste at the border near napan not far from kefa. i did not need an authorization letter from the embassy. the countries of the schengen agreement...most european countries...dont need anything to cross the border. its free. all i needed was a flight out of indonesia, in order to get my new free indonesian visa. i crossed the border, got a stamp in and out of the country in timor leste and went back straight away. i must admit that it might be a little difficult without speaking a little of bahasa indonesia. i suppose you could do the exact same procedure at the bigger border from atampua to timor leste (motaain). ask edwin for any help. he knows!)

Lavalon Seaview Hostel is by far the BEST place to stay in Kupang! With gorgeous sea views, wonderful & comfortable beds, relaxing hammocks, a homestyle atmosphere, extremely reasonable prices, delicious food and owner Edwin Lerrick who goes out of his way to make you feel at home, there is no reason to stay anywhere else! Tours around West Timor and Timor Leste can also be arranged. I highly recommend staying and even extending your stay here!

Very pleased with Lavalon! Pleased so much I stayed over 3 weeks in Kupang, soaking in every bit of information and understanding Edwin Lerrick had to offer, and this is a lot. Edwin has extensive knowledge of the Nusa Tengarra island chain, contacts from Jakarta all the way through East Timor, has drivers and vehicles on call for trips throughout Timor. Edwin also helps with advice and contacts to maximize your time in Indonesia with the visa processing, there is so little time available between obtaining a visa in Indonesia and traveling back to an immigration office to extend your visa, remaining there 1 week minimum up to 2 weeks before you can travel again, that all the help you can get is greatly appreciated. A 30 day extendable visa, minus travel time to and from the immigration office and remaining close while your passport is in immigration office hands, actually allows for only about 2 weeks time to enjoy the rest of Indonesia before you must start the process all over again. The 30 day extendable visa and the social budaya visa are both affected in this manner. If Indonesia will instead issue 90 day visas as Malaysia does, many more people will come to Indonesia to enjoy this very large, very wonderful and very unique country. Am thankful to Edwin for all the extra effort he has given to help extend my time here.

Darwin to Kupang (Lavalon Hostel), via Dili in 2018.
I just wanted to share the process of how I got to Kupang from Dili as an Australian. I orginally left from Darwin Australia. Before I left, I organised a 211 Visa from the Indonesian Consulate in Darwin. This takes 5 business days to process during which time you need to relinquish your passport. The 211 visa gives you 60 days of travel in Indonesia and is activated on the day that you cross over into Indonesia. This visa, I am told, is extendable through any immigration office throughout Indonesia but I recommend to make sure you organise this earlier than 10 days out from the expiry (day 49). This visa was necessary for me to have before arriving at the Indonesia border to give me an extendable 60 day visa rather than just receiving a non-extendable 30 day visa on arrival at the border.
The visa requires proof of entry and exit into Indo so I booked a cheap flight 59 days in advance out of Medan to Singapore which I will forfeit. I also included the booking of my Darwin-Dili flight with an accompanying signed letter explaining my intention to enter Indonesia by land on an unspecified day (Motaain border).
Transport from Dili to Darwin is simple enough to organise and the Dili hostels will give you plenty of information on that. I used local buses and broke the journey up with a stop in Balibo to pay homage to the Balibo6 journalists (lets not forget Roger East).
When you get to Kupang ask a friendly local how to get to Lavalon Hostel (Also Hotel Lavalon) and they will most probably give you a lift in exchange for practicing their English.
The Lavalon hostel is, to my knowledge, the only hostel in town and caters to a shoestring budget with a dorm room option, but also to a flashpacking budget with a private double-bed room complete with ocean views and a private bathroom. The owner, Edwin Lerrick, is a very well connected local and will accommodate your every need. The Wifi is free/fast/reliable and breakfast is free which includes local coffee and banana pancake. Its the best place to meet like-minded travelers on their transit to either Flores, Sumba, or Dili from Kupang.

Clean and peaceful place, near night food market. Very helpful owner. Sent forgotten belongings to my place in malaysia. Thanks a lot

This is a great place to stay. I arrived on the 9th of October and will be staying here for a couple of weeks. The hostel is well located close to the night markets and the fish market. Transport is at the front door. I just get in a bemo and I can go anywhere in Kupang for about 3000 rupiahs (30 cents). There is also an ATM across the road.
The hostel is right on the water and I enjoy lazing in the hammock of an afternoon, sipping on one of the delicious homemade juices that Edwin makes for me. Of a night I often enjoy a meal and a bintang. (Did I tell you that Edwin is a chef also). Or you can wander to any number of local eateries.
Accommodation caters for all budgets. You can choose from a 4 bed dorm with a fan. Or you can get your own double room with a fan for 160,000 rupiah (about $12), and air-conditioning for 220,000 ( about $18), or the lot which includes air-conditioning, hot shower and your own inside western toilet for 260,000 (about $23). Plus this you get a delicious banana pancake and tea or coffee for breakfast.
Edwin is a great host and help. He has organised for me to go on a tour into the mountains tomorrow for a few days to see some local villages etc. Edwin has a lot of knowledge and information to help any traveller explore Kupang and the surrounding islands. So this place is you one stop shop for everything that you need in Kupang.
The hostel is highly recommended by Lonely Planet.
So if you are looking for an enjoyable relaxed stay at very reasonable prices come and stay at Lavalon Seaview Hostel and Cafe is the place to be. I might even give up the hammock for you.

A great place to stay while you visit Kupang or make arrangements for onward travel. The owner, Edwin, is a mine of information and help.
The rooms are good, and cheap too. Pancakes for breakfast? Yum.
Nicolas Poinot (10/09/2017 08:11)
Nice hostel. Well located. Edwin the owner is very nice and helpful. He knows very well his country not only west timor and is able to help for a lot of things. The hostel has a dormitory, and private rooms with or without air-conditioning, with or without private bathroom. It is close to the fish market (5 min walk) where you can eat very well.
Henri de Treville (09/09/2017 03:01)
The place is brilliant as a starting point to discover West Timor and beyond. The owner Edwin helped me greatly with planning every step of my journey. I did not have to bother about anything and just enjoyed the holiday.
The place has a dormitory room but I stayed in a private room with a hot shower (yahoo!) and the best ever view to the sea.
Try those banana panckakes for breakfast. They are good!
yen nguyen (06/09/2017 11:14)
The reasonable price in Kupang. The room was clean. 140k / double bed with AC, share bathroom, nice breakfast. And 160k/ standard room with private bathroom. Nice view to the sea. Exchange book for free ^^ . The owner is very helpful.

Lavalon Hostel is THE BEST place to stay in Kupang if you are seeking great budget accommodation and sound travel advice. The owner, Edwin, is extremely helpful regardless of whether you're trying to figure out travel logistics or just looking for some interesting suggestions on places to visit. The hostel is also located on the water and is a nice place to just chill out. This is definitely the friendliest and best value place in Kupang.
Christian Van Marle (02/08/2017 09:01)
1 word: awesome. More words: the rooms are small and good. You have an airco and a bed in one of the private rooms. There are fans in the dorms. But the reason why you should go here is the atmosphere, the people and the owner who will help you with anything you want to do in timor.
Klaudyna Brzostowska (01/08/2017 14:27)
Staying in Lavalon Hostel was a real pleasure. From the first moment you feel like you stay at your friends house. Welcoming, helpful and sincere owner and its crew will help you feel comfortable and well rested. Any travel arrangements or shopping you need to do in Kupang, you can be sure to be advised upon. Name it, you got it. Great place. Great location. Great time to spend in Kupang.

When you check with the staff, the rooms are available, then you check with the owner, when he saw a face from Asia, the rooms are not available, full, interesting! To be honest, you also have a Asia face! Maybe the owner think he has a western-spirit.Fortunely to the owner that there is little hostel In Kupang, maybe just one.
But one suggestion for the grandpa is that 'Pls travel the world, not Indonesia, then maybe you could figure out something'

Very helpful and friendly host. Interesting conversations. Seaside room bright and sunny.
Agata Ka (27/05/2017 05:06)
The food and the coffee were good. The seating area was pleasant with some breeze coming from the ocean, as well as with some shade which is quite usefull. The big bedroom was comfortable and had a nice view onto the sea:)
Ben Monckton (06/03/2017 03:53)
Seems the owner is super friendly to tourists, but not so keen on locals or expats. I asked if I could get my mail sent from Java to his place and he started ranting about people mailing drugs. It was a bit odd, I left it at that. There's plenty of good cheap accommodation in Kupang, but I guess if you don't speak Indonesian this place would be helpful.

Edwin and his hostel is the place to go in Kupang. I have been there twice and second time I was coming back there like visiting a good friend. Incredible pancakes for breakfast is another thing worth to mention. Hostel is clean, has great view on the sea and has good vibe !!! Definitely worth recommendation!!!

Great, quaint hostel. One of the few in Kupang as of 2017. Owner is a previous Indonesian movie star and loves to talk with westerners/backpackers; very friendly staff and they will help with anything you might need! Hostel offers food including Indonesian food and an American-style burger, but it's also close to the night market and city center, with lots of shops/restaurants in walking distance. Decent view of ocean and there is also usually a hammock hung up. (Beware of saltwater crocodiles.) They also rent out motorbikes here, daily rate of around idr 50-80k depending on your sweet-talking skills.

I wouldn't say I have good experience here. Called this morning to see if there is room available, the guy on the phone right away told me there is no room available but he said it in an odd way. Looking from the website, I can guess the reason why. So, I told my husband who is a foreigner to call and book it for me, surprisingly (well, not really) there are rooms available!! Well, there disappointing.
I called again to make sure that I can check in today with the reservation my husband made. But only found another disappointment, the guy told me there are only the dormitory available and when I tried to confront him because my husband said there is "regular room" available, then he change his mind and said there is another room available but with the shower room outside. Really?!?!?!
I can't stop feeling discriminated. Because I'm not a foreigner so I can't stay there?! This is racism.

My room was awesome, clean with sea view. Falling asleep with sounds of waves is always good. It's really easy to see that Edwin, the owner, likes what he's doing. He treated me like a princess and even helped to arrange tickets to East Timor and airport pick up. Internet was fast, I even got a coffee and snacks.
Sturla Skúlason (20/11/2016 00:57)
Lovely place. You can get a dorm room for 70k rupiah and it comes with breakfast. The staff is helpful and the owner Edward talks really good english and can help you get around or point you into the direction you want to go in. You can rent bikes and car but I didn't do it myself.

I was very lucky to find this hotel. It's very nice place with sea view and it's clean. The breakfast is very good. Edwin is friendly, he have a lot of information and he help me to go to change money... there is all the necessary here: hammock, books exchange, laundry service, internet (he lend me his computer because I haven't computer or phone)...
For information, Im arrived here after to have been in Timor-Leste to make a new indonesia' visa. Ive been in embassy in Dili because I wanted 2months visa but for this you need sponsor (he has to send letter and copy passport), you have to do letter also, copy passport and identity photo. After, this take 3 days, minimum and 50 dollars.
When I arrived on the land border to get a free visa for one month (cannot extented), they say me than if I want 2 months visa Ive to take fly and get a extendable visa on arrival. Nowhere I have found this information before...

A very nice and friendly place! The owner, Edwin Lerrick, is sooo helpful for any information, booking and just friendly talk. He took me around with his motorbike just because i needed to buy contact lenses cleanser. The rooms are very clean, some with a nice view on the sea and the beach just nearby. Lavalon Hostel is a great place to start and plan your trip in Timor and Rote.

Enjoyed my stay here. Good value for money. Edwin was so helpful with travel arrangements and a great host. When I arrived, he stayed to have a tea and brought out a yummy chocolate pancake to share. The view from my window was fantastic and the bed very comfortable. Definitely recommend requesting the sea view room, and staying here for a stopover in Kupang.
