The park is composed of 416,040 hectares of dryland dipterocarp forest, peat swampforest, heath forest, mangrove and coastal beach forest, and secondary forest. The park may be accessed from Kumai by speedboat along the Kumai River and then the Sekonyer River to Camp Leakey, a journey that takes about 1.5 hours. The Kumai River forms the northern border of the park. Beyond that the peat forest has been removed to make way for oil palm plantations.

Despite being a protected national park, approximately 65% of the park's primary forest is degraded. It is the loss of natural habitat that is the greatest threat to the wildlife. Friends of National Parks Foundation is an Indonesian NGO that has been working to restore the habitat in the Pasalat and Beguruh regions of the park since 1997. It also operates a conservation education centre in Pasalat.

Four research centers have been established within the park for the study and rehabilitation of orangutans and other primates. Camp Leakey, founded in 1971 with assistance from the Leakey Foundation, was the first of these centers. It was here where Dr. Birute Galdikas began her career studying the behavior of rescued and orphaned orangutans that were reintroduced into the wild. Her research was highlighted as the cover article of National Geographic in October 1975. Dr. Galdikas is now considered one of the world’s leading experts on orangutan behaviour and is the founder and president of the Orangutan Foundation International.

We had amazing tour time with Varada Borneo Tour. We booked tour so easy, payments online were very helpful. Boat was clean, they changed linen every day, food was very awesome delicious.
Our guide was very knowledgeable, helpful, and Orangutan is so cute. We met a dominant male at first and second camp. Very recommended!!!!!

Fantastic! Natural wildlife, you just take a flight to Iskandar airport of Pangkal bun, go to river Port near Kumai port to take a boat to Taman National Tanjung Puting. It's take 1 hour using speedboat or 3 hours using ordinary boat. You will follow natural river and can see crocodiles, birds and monkeys on the forest. There some orang utans at feeding point during the feeding time start at 1.00 PM. Beware if you bring your kids or some small bag, the devil monkey could steal.

Fantastic. Ivend Stephen (you can find him on Facebook if you want a tour) was our guide. Excellent wildlife, tour, food and hospitality. Dinner with fireflies. We visited 3 orangutan feeding stations throughout the park. We also planted seedlings to help with reforestation. 3 days, 2 nights. One night on the Klotok (boat), and the other at Rimba lodge.

Very good park & experience. Staff feed orangutans and you can see how they come to eat. We saw some orangutans very very close!! Amazing forest trekking. I recommend to stay in a klotok (boat). From the boat we saw wild orangutans too. Dont miss it!

Simply an amazing experience. All the rainforest should be preserved for future generations, visit this place and understand why.

The whole reason I came to Indonesian again was to see the Orangutans. This is a must do!! Amazing experience I will never forget

Really nice experience! Visiting the park with a klotok driven by local people was really awesome. And the rainforest was just sublime!! Do not hesitate to come here during your journey to Indonesia.

Just don't forget to protect yourself from the mosquitos, specially during the night and when walking through the rainforest. Also, ask your klotok driver to sleep at a fireflight spot on your way back to Kumai. It's a very beatiful experience.

After doing extensive research on Tanjung Puting National Park I found that you must enter the park with a tour guide. You will have to choose a guide company and they will purchase all permits needed for you to enter the park. Thank God for our guide (Deny), we wouldn't have been able to have the experience we did without his knowledge. We booked a 3 day 2 night boat tour through Tanjung Puting National Park through Jenie Subaru (whom we found on several traveler sites, and the Lonely Planet guide book).

We flew into Jakarta International Airport and had to take a smaller plane to Pangkalan Bun where we took a taxi to Kumai to get out our boat to enter Tanjung Puting National Park.

Once our tour of Tanjung Puting started our guide Deny immediately started pointing out wildlife along the river also educating us on how Palm Oil and illegal logging is continuing to destroy Tanjung National Park, but that a group called The Orangutan Green team was buying land in efforts to preserve the Park and Wildlife living there. Before reaching the first of the three orangutan feeding stations set up by Tanjung Puting National Park we saw Proboscis monkeys (only found in Borneo), Macaques, Silver Langer,  and several birds that I cannot recall but our guide was more than knowledgeable about.

Upon arriving at the first feeding station I was excited to see orangutans for the first time. The second feeding station was closer than the first aid more orangutans showed up to the feeding site. Deny (our guide) brought us to see the inner forest and orangutans in their natural environment after each feeding site. Camp leaky was the last station and by far my favorite. The hike after the feeding station at Camping Leeky was the most beautiful. We saw the beautiful nature of the forest, plants (which Deny pointed out, named, and knew backgrounds about) , beautiful moss, snakes, snake holes, and also even got to see some orangutans in their natural environment just hanging out in trees doing normal orangutan stuff which is precisely what we wanted to see. I couldn't have been happier. We skipped any night hiking to see the nocturnal wildlife in the park because honestly I was far too exhausting from the day adventures but next time I'll go!

We slept on a mattress on the top of the boat under a provided mosquito net! Listening to the sounds of the wildlife before falling asleep was amazing and being woken up by a Rhinoceros Hornbill flying over head and opening my eyes to see a troop of Proboscis monkeys in the trees above was pretty epic.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and made us feel safe. There were also several park workers at every feeding station. All and all the Park is amazing and I'd definitely recommend seeing this before you no longer have the ability to. I'd also recommend booking your tour of Tanjung National Park through Jenie Subaru and requesting Deny as your guide simply because he made our trip perfect.

Easily one of the most incredible experiences of my life. We used Jenie Subaru who was fantastic.

Nathan Wrigley (06/04/2016 17:46)
Really great place to spot Orang Utans. Was completely deserted when I was there, making it a magical experience.

Ivan Exposito (07/10/2015 05:06)
Amazing experience! Probably one of the best places in the world to spot Orangutans in the wild. Do the 3D2N Klotok tour with Fardi, his professionalism and kindness is simply outstanding and difficult to find over those latitudes. Orangutanhouseboattour.

Seeing the orangutans in the natural habitat is one of the most special moments of any trip to Indonesia. Sadly their land is being destroyed for palm oil plantations. What you see of the animals, though, is natural. This is not a zoo and is not for anyone who is expecting one.
