In expensive teak furnitures... teak dining chair $63 versus Scanteak > $200

My first time using them was more than 8 years ago and they were fantastic. This time round, utter disappointment. Overpriced, and was blamed for not requesting for a site inspection to look at my load when they didn't inform in the first place they wanted to do a site inspection.
Movers' attitudes were unpleasant. Walked around my house in their shoes, which was fine for the house I was moving out from. But they did the same for my new place and used their trolleys in and out of my house, scratching my floor.
Load wise, I was able to fit all my stuff into a single truckload with a separate mover a year ago, Helpinghand said they couldn't fit my stuff into a truck and charged extra for additional load, which was bewildering because I moved the same stuff a year ago MINUS a sofa, a dining set, washer, dryer, a queen bed and more. So I couldn't understand why now without these, I couldn't fit into a single truckload when I could with all these stuff a year ago.
Boxes provided were small and little, and they asked y I didn't buy more boxes -- said by using garbage bags to pack, they couldn't fit in everything. My previous mover provided all the boxes and bigger ones at that.
Conclusion:
I paid more than $800 for a move that wasn't complete - I ended up making multiple trips because even with 1.5truckload, they said they still couldn't take everything. They dumped everything into a single room at my new place and filled it to the brim - I couldn't even walk in to find my boxes. My prev mover had helped separate the boxes based on labels to diff rooms.
Like a few of the other reviews, they also imposed an additional cost saying that we did not inform them of the distance they needed to move our stuff due to restrictions by our estate's management.
After paying this ridiculous amount, note that this amount isn't inclusive of the polishing I may have to do for my floor. I've been recommending people to use them since my last great experience with them but like how others have shared, the team seems to be very diff than before.
Think twice before engaging them. Of the four times I've moved, this was an absolute nightmare and an expensive one.

Great place to get teak furniture. A well stocked fishing gear shop too.

Reasonably priced furniture. We managed to get the marble top dining table which we been looking around for during their year end 70% off deal! Oh you are shopping and supporting a great cause at the same time too!

An organization set up to help ex-offenders and really worthy of your support. They sell teak furniture at very reasonable prices, the business being one way ex-offenders are given responsibilities and also as a means for helping to fund their operation costs. I bought a dining table, dining chairs, and some balcony furniture from them and am very happy with the quality.

This is an organisation that helps ex-offenders. It sells teak furniture at good prices.

Not your typical furniture showroom, they display their Indonesian teak products usually outdoors under canopy. Browse without being feeling watched. Laid back atmosphere like where the wood's from. And there's the social cause as well, of course.

Beware and never thought of using their service. Had a very bad experience recently . Surveyor came and quoted me a price for disposal of all items including flowers pots. Since the first trip the lorry was unable to finish the job, I arrange with them for a second trip with a agreed additional charge. When they came for the second trip which was about a week later, I remind them to dispose the flower pots. One of the worker started to call back the company and starts to complain about it. Later their supervisor came and accuse me of not informing them about the flower pots and that I have never asked any surveyor to come for survey. I told him that I have informed the surveyor,Raymond about the flowers pots and he told me no problem at all. After the big argument with the supervisor, finally he charged me an additional of $30. BEWARE AND NEVER EVER USE THEIR SERVICE AGAIN.

This place used to be the formal Sin Min High School. Since the school had moved many years back,it is being use by the helping hand. The mission is good but seems that there are still improvements to be made. The sales of furniture part seems ok but the service part (Rendering of house moving services) really needs to improve.Thats why I am only giving it a 3 star rating.

We have used Helping Hand to move 4 times during the past 20 years. The last move was in Sept 2016. Called them a weeks ago to get a quote to move again from our temporary residence. Told us they need to charge us a higher price than what we paid in Sept 2016 as we are moving to a condo and condos do not allow their trucks into the basement car park to offload, so they need to transport our belongings over a longer distance. Thought the price and reason was acceptable so we agreed and they came to our house to give an assessment quote.
And then the surprise! They wanted to charge us extra for moving a table glass top and extra again for providing a pick-up to ferry our stuff from the big truck parked at condo entrance to our lift lobby at the basement.
I informed them we don't need the pick-up as there's a ramp directly from the entrance to just across our lift lobby, they said they need to charge for distance more than 30m. When I told them the ramp is only about 20m long, They still insisted that it's a long ramp, we need to pay extra. Period!
Their constant reason or excuse was that these are their company new regulated prices. Mind you, all these extras were on top of the already higher price quoted for move to condo! Well, they have just lost a faithful customer, I'm taking my business elsewhere.

Extremely dubious moving practice. The surveyor came, verbally quoted me a NETT price. Then I agreed to it. Very shortly after he brings up the boxes, he said a piece of furniture is consider a special item and will be charged extra which I agreed. I asked for a black and white quotation while the surveyor was on site and it took 3 days of back and forth for the quotation to reach me. Meanwhile they have already asked me to confirm the move over the phone but before the black and white quotation reaches me. The actual quotations I received in black and white exclude GST. I decide to cancel the move and then they demand that I pay the cancellation fee of $50 dollars.
Very dubious practice and engage at your own risk.

I had the most horrible experience with helping hands. And the fact is I did not even get past the moving department in obtaining a quotation from them! The person giving the quotation was extremely rude and very impatient, and told me they do not like to do dismantling jobs and suggested I get my own carpenter to dismantle if I thought their price was not right. Not sure if I will trust a company like that in moving my furniture. If I could rate with no stars and post, I would. But I had to rate it before this review can be posted. Maybe I was just unlucky to get this person picking up my call.

Nice people, cheap wood furniture
Lynda Williams (04/08/2016 08:51)
I used their moving services and it was a dreadful experience:
- Firstly they scratched my wooden floor with boxes and admitted it there and then. Then they lied and said they didn't do it. Then they said they would patch it up and sandpapered the scratch which made the mark even worse and I had to get the whole floor revarnished.
- Secondly, the guy on the phone is very aggressive as I wouldn't pay the full amount until the floor was fixed. They then wouldn't give me full bank account details so I could not make the bank transfer. I requested this on several occasions and they continued to call me with very aggressive behaviour and threatened to come to my office and drive me to the cash point. This actually scared me. In the end, I called their bank to get the bank details as they were so unhelpful and transferred the money.
Worst experience and especially as moves can be so stressful, they were certainly not a helping hand.

I like their mission, their merchandise, and their prices. Definitely worth shopping.
Their showroom isn't particularly posh but is overflowing with well-made beautiful furniture. Solid wood in timeless styles. Definitely worth a look if you are in the market.

Those who buy Teak often fall into 3 categories: Middle, Middle Upper and Rich. The former two will look for mostly cheap furniture but with a certain quality to it.
I got a bar table at The Helping Hand two days ago since we moved to a 4 room flat. I must say, the place does not look good on first sight - it's an old school renovated into a warehouse - and the service is ok, but not top notch.
The quality of the furniture, however, is good. It is very decent grade teak (or AA as they told me) furniture and design wise there are a few - such as by bar table - that really hits the mark. You can't compare with the best, of course, but I must say that I got one with a good quality and a reasonable price. Then again, being a Halfway House, they have to reduce all prices by 20%, which gives it the edge.
Service wise, they do offer delivery, though I'm not too sure how expensive it is compared to others.
