Flawless experience. It rains anytime. Pleasant climate ywt keep umbrellas while visiting or you have to rent them. Choice is yours. We thought to help out the locals. Don't wear short or revealing clothes. Be covered properly. Bali temples have strict rule. The drive up to Besakih temple is as beautiful. Green and clean. The place definitely has an energy -a vibe to it.Enjoy!

Very Huge Temple
This complex has 50 or more small small temples together forming the Mother temple I'm Bali
The Entrance ticket is 60000 rupiah, which includes free guide, motor cycle ride(if you park the car 1.5 km away to the temple I'm case of heavy rush) , free Sarong.
Usually in Bali, in any of the temple the tourist are not allowed to enter the garbagraha or the main shrine.
We are allowed just to see the structures
View from the temple is good
Can enjoy the temple and views a lot if there are less tourists on a particular day

I was been there on March 2018. After I buy the ticket for entrance to the temple they just force me pay more for the local guide and moterbike service to get reached to the temple about 1 km.(the guys explain) but in real you can just walk to the temple by yourself. Motorbike service just only 1way service after finished visit the temple you have to walk back to your car !! That’s so bad !!!
— Local guide pay (20,000 IDR) but I pay 50,000 IDR because don’t have small money
— motorbike service pay 200,000 IDR/person
***** Feeling bad for this place for cheating *****

Huge place, highly recommended to visit. On beginning they will offer you motor bike ride to entrance for some cash....no need as it is 5 minutes walk. Once inside it is amazing. Recommended visit time 2-3 hours

They push to pay you for guiding service but guy (local guide) hasn't been able to answer to the simple questions in English even. this is another place where Balinese efforts to take your money for nothing.

Largest temple in Bali. There are several steps. Those who worship are only allowed inside the temple. Local guide and sarong comes with entry fee. Nearby town was effected by volcano errupting so be prepared for several younger children selling postcards. Beautiful temple and scenery
Akshaya Ravi (15/11/2017 04:09)
This temple is on the slope of Agung volcano. The entry ticket is a combo of entry +local guide + sarong (piece of cloth to drape around the waist..without which you are not allowed inside the temple). I am not sure if we can take only entry + sarong and skip the guide part. Since we already paid we took a local guide and we were a little disappointed. But that was ok considering they learn English only for tourism.

Use Jl Entry Pura Besakih to entry the temple, those “local mafia” at this entrance is much more “friendly” compare with another entrance. They charged me 70K.
i wonder why Indonesia tourism board doesn’t take any action agains those “local mafia”, i guess is because of they dont want this holy temple to become tourist crowded.
By the way, i already sent an email to Indonesia tourism board, hope more tourists will send them an email to get their attention.

The place is really beautiful! I drove motorbike from kuta to Besakih, the journey was awesome, but when we were there too many scams from local. We cant enter the temples without locals asking some tips. Meh!
jekk pak (23/08/2017 02:58)
Besakih is a place to avoid. It would be a fabulous place to go to, if it was not for those people who want to take advantage of you there. Horrible experience.
Evangelia Sylleliadou (25/07/2017 09:03)
The "mother temple", an impressive place in Bali. When you buy a ticket, you are assigned to a guide with no extra cost. I think it's the government's way of protecting the tourists by scammer guides.
berkan ozturk (17/07/2017 01:00)
what marek jasozs described perfectly sums up what we experienced yesterday... unfortunately...
even the official people which control the tickets etc. try to fool you which makes the experience a complete bummer.
there is no free toilet, you have to pay 5000idr... normally this should have been included in the enterance fee.
it was a very disappointing experience because the place is very beautiful but the people there are always asking for payments/money. we understand that we enter a sacred place, and we commit to be respectful, but what they are doing is not really holy, especially considering the fact that they lie about ceremonies, local tour guides and asking for extra money for every step. long story short, other than the enterance fee and parking fee, dont share a penny... i believe the people who visit these places with tours are giving money away which makes it hard for budget travelers to keep up with.

THE bigest hinduTemple in bali indonesia. About 2 hours from ngurah rai Denpasar Airport by motor bike,
Marek Jarosz (10/12/2016 11:30)
It was the worst tourist experience we've ever experienced. First, scammers try to tell you there is a ceremony, so you need an escort - which is a lie. On the way to the temple we were harassed by a "temple guardian", who was very serious about respecting their tradition and a need of a Balinese escort. Finally we ended up going alone, but it was very tough.
On the way back we warned a foreign couple about a scam, which really irritated a guardian, who became aggressive. I was pushed, offended (I wasn't aware they know so many course words) and accused of "robbing the community".
It is very sad the officials do not do anything about these scams, which really ruins the whole experience. I strongly recommend not visiting Pura Besakih (there are other impressive temples around the island) until something really changes.
Remember - do not pay anything but a ticket.

One of the oldest temple in bali. Peaceful place. Local people call this temple as mother temple. Our driver took us there and buy small offering for us. We are allowed to pray with those offerings.
Roxy Wells (09/11/2016 12:19)
Although, we had read about scam and received a detailed warning from our private driver. Nothing prepared us for the frightening experience at this temple. Even though you buy tickets for the temple at the roadblock and are free to roam the grounds if you are properly dressed, the locals are EXTREMELY aggressive if you do not use their guiding service. Our driver warned us that guides are NOT mandatory, but, if we wanted one not pay him more than 20,000ir. but, some guides will demand 400,000ir at the end. We kindly refused all guiding services along the way. As we were about to go up into the temple area, a rejected guide began loudly SCREAMING at us and demanded that we leave the grounds immediately and that the police were coming to arrest us. Other tourists ( without guides) came to our rescue and he backed off. We proceeded, but when we got to the very top temple, 2 men dressed in white maintenance uniforms, sweeping the cement, asked if they could bring us incense and offerings ( for a fee) to meditate. We politely refused. They tried to block our way, rudely told us to leave immediately and that photo's were not allowed. We felt unsafe and decided to leave the temple. Being very well travelled, we have never been treated like this in any country, nor anywhere else in Bali. Frankly this type of temple is everywhere in Bali. These temples are not well maintained and you will not be missing anything if you avoid this place. The funny thing is that this is "supposedly" their most sacred temple....what a joke!
Matthew Cawood (03/10/2016 07:53)
This is the biggest temple is Bali. It was interesting to walk around and had many photo opportunities. I don't think it is too different from any of the other temples in Bali, they did start to feel a bit repetitive after the first few. This place is setup for tourists unfortunately; we have to pay entrance per person, pay for parking, then we had to pay for a compulsory guide. We were also pushed into buying offerings and (extra) sarongs, though we managed to decline. This hour long attraction cost us ~300K IDR.
Jason Mackay (26/09/2016 14:10)
Go with a guide so you won't get hassled when you arrive. Too many locals trying to capitalize on all the tourists. The temple grounds itself are incredible.. everywhere you look is like a postcard.
saurabh kumar pandey (12/09/2016 23:22)
The temple is beautiful, but beware of rude locals. But some offerings for the prayer. Once you have that you can climb up to the stairs till the main temple gate. There you can find a temple guardian, expo can help you perform prayer in balanese way. These guardian generally has an odd card. There might be imposters that would try to stop you from even climbing the temple stairs, by saying that you need a local to climb that stairs, but you can walk till the temple gates

Often referred to as Bali’s ‘mother temple’, Besakih is a grand complex of different clan temples and shrines. Regarded as the largest and holiest of the island's temples, it is located at 1,000 metres above sea level on the south-western slopes of Mount Agung. There are at least 70 celebrations held here each year as each shrine has its own anniversary. Exploring the whole site requires a day, however most visits cover only the largest and central complex, the Pura Penataran Agung. Another temple called the Pura Pasimpangan is east of the Pura Penataran Agung, and on the higher slopes is Pura Pengubengan, which has great vistas and is a half-hour walk from Penataran Agung. Sarongs and sashes are provided for a donation fee at the main entrance, while some colourful souvenir textiles are also available for purchase at the many kiosks around the parking complex.

I always have amazing spiritual experience everytime I come here. My favorite is to pray in Pura Gelap. I have one guide here and I always meet him here. Sure I need to pay for entrance, but because I have a guide, I haven't met a really bad experience (I hope never).
Tony Li (02/06/2016 13:31)
Extremely disappointed with the unfriendly and aggressive locals. If they don't enjoy working in tourism, why put them there?
Victoria G (26/05/2016 13:12)
The worst place in bali !!! just turist cheating !!!

Wat een commercie! Afzetters! Cheating at a holt Temple, trying to make big money only on tourists!
Not worth visiting.
Maxime Teyssier (03/10/2015 11:06)
This temple is absolutely magnificent. But what I do not appreciate is that you pay the entry at some control point on the road (35k rps for 2), then you enter temple area (don't forget your sarong to cover your legs..) where you need to make a donation for the association of the guardians of the temple. We were told that you don't need a guide but, as a day with special ceremony when we approached the temple, some guy told us no you cannot enter without a guide... Par 10$/person...
I agree that tourist need to pay and support the renovation of the temple but if find this excessive... And besides I also did not appreciate the fact that every 5 meters someone tries to sell food, clothes and other stuff, even without the temple... This breaks the vision of the sacred thing they want to give you...
