Smileys Homestay was the best stay we had so far. Cecilia is a great cook and she prepared many great meals so we actually never went out to eat but always looked forward to her cooking. She offered us great meals for our vegetarian diet for a very reasonable price. Furthermore she also took us to the local market to show us around when she was picking up the ingredients for the meals, which was an interesting and fun thing to do.
Both Smiley and Cecilia speak English very well and you won't have a problem communicating with them. They are both open, friendly, up-front and interesting persons that we had great talks with, and they also provided us with many interesting details of their background and the local culture. Smiley is a very experienced guide and took us to many great spots and provided lots of information on both culture, nature and local lifestyle. Furthermore, he does all this for a very reasonable price, and his guiding does not feel touristy at all. Also his friend Iwan offers great trips and information, and he is just as friendly and interesting as a person as Smiley and Cecilia are.
Do keep in mind that this is a homestay and not a hotel, so you will have a shared bathroom and see either Cecilia, Smiley or the kids at most times of the day in the house, with great potential for interacting if you'd like to. The beds for the guests are located on the upper floor, where you can relax or sleep at all times of the day without being interrupted.

After years of travelling and hundreds of hotels/guesthouses/homestays this was easily one of my favorite places. Wonderful people in suprisingly fun city. With cecilias and smileys tips we gett so much out of berastagi and indonesian culture. Food is also exellent. I suggest going to besrastagi to only live with them. Hope that I can come back someday.

It's Time for me to leave berastagi and the beautiful family i met there. Smiley, Cécilia and their kids are a very special family to me. So generous, With an understanding of happiness: simple Life, AMAZING food, sharing of knowledges, music, playing With the kids...
I stayed one week there and came back after one week again . If you want to be part of the local Life, They are THE people to contact. I visited volcano and hotsprings With Smiley Lubis and eat the best food ever cooked by his wife, cecilia. ( if you want real good bread, here It Is).
Im happy to meet talented people like Them.
See you again and Warm Thanks!

Very friendly homestay with best food in town! We made great guided tours with Ismail "Smiley" Lubis to Mt. Sibayak, Ketambe, Singkil, Lake Toba, local markets, Batak villages and other very unique places you wouldn't find without Smiley. We found out about him randomly and ended up staying almost 2 weeks! We hope to get the chance to come back soon again! 5 stars for him and his wife Cecilia!
