TPK KERKHOFF SUKABUMI

TPK (Kerkhoff Christian Cemetery) located on Jln Pramuka, Citamiang, Sukabumi, west Java 43144 is a Dutch ex-cemetery that has existed since the days before Indonesia's independence in 1945.

The Netherlands settled in Sukabumi for exploiting fertile soil and suitable for Tea plant in Goalpara, around Selabintana and Manik mountain after Lampegan railway tunnel to Cianjur. Also the Dutch have quite a lot of relics, among others, Chapel which since post-independence transferred to the Batak community living in Sukabumi which mostly are soldiers. The church is HKBP on Jalan Gunung Puyuh a tip not far from Cipelang bridge. The Dutch heritage chapel is still well preserved to this day. Another relic of the railway station, pendopo now is the house of the residence second level and ex office of the Dutch colonial government in Sukabumi. Old Dutch homes along Bhayangkara Road to ex AAK (Academy of Police Force) now become Secapa (School of Police Officer Candidate). Also the old Dutch-style houses we can trace from the "Lapangan Merdeka" which's now called the city square continues north through Selabatu Street to Selabintana. Unfortunately most of the historical relics that have changed a lot.

At the time of independence Indonesia Kerkhoff burial ground was taken over the government and the city government Sukabumi given the authority to manage it. Not surprisingly, from the Dutch burial, this place became a Christian public cemetery.

Along with the development of the era, the city of Sukabumi which was originally in the Dutch era is a cool little town and beautiful, now seem increasingly crowded and chaotic. Urbanization occurs every time and migrants come from Cibadak, Surade, Jampang, Pelabuhan Ratu, etc.

However, Sukabumi District's a large area in West Java, while regional development's not always sufficient for the life of the people. No wonder they came flocking to the city of Sukabumi for the sake of and on behalf of the improvement of life, although in the end not all succeeded and most of the more crowded urban areas in Sukabumi.

Back to TPK Kerkhoff, although the managing government's the city of Sukabumi and in line with the agreement in the transfer of Dutch assets to Indonesia, the Dutch government's obliged to sponsor every Kerkhoff in Indonesia, including TPK Kerkhoff in Sukabumi. But in practice it's sad and very disturbing that the TPK Kerkhoff's now a completely untidy mess. Where is the benefit fund used? Are not there still many Dutch tombs here? Where are the tombs now? Where the marble statues decorate the tomb complete with their respective name tags. In front of the tomb now it's standing majestic Citamiang Polsek. But the looting of the tomb's still going on. And the great local government instead uses less than 1500 M² of land below Citamiang Police into the garbage truck parking lot of the city government, after disposing of garbage in the final dump.

My recent pilgrimage to TPK Kerkhoff was very disappointed that the Mayor of Sukabumi and the Governor of West Java once planned to divert TPK Kerkhoff to private parties. Do these two officials know that the TPK Kerkhoff is a historical heritage that can not be contested? Did they know that they were obliged to fence and clean the tomb, including restoring the marble statues to the original place according to the colonial archive and the funeral archive in the era of Indonesia's independence? Did they know that it's unethical to place garbage trucks in an area of approximately 1500 M² in the cemetery by dismantling the tombs there for the sake of ignorant ignorance of history.

After a strong condemnation, however, I still give 5 star to TPK Kerkhoff, because this cemetery's actually one of the most important historical attractions in Sukabumi. I ask the Sukabumi Municipal Government for the knowledge of the central government to immediately restore this tomb to fit the original. I think the history archive is more than enough for that.
