Situated in a beautifully restored colonial house surrounded by lush gardens this restaurant is an oasis of calm in the middle of chaos, restaurants and bars stretching along Jl Kemang Raya in Kemang. Enter the circular driveway and walk up the entrance steps into the elegant foyer and then through to the dining room which appears to be almost a large conservatory with floor to ceiling windows on three sides looking out into lush greenery.
The tables are well spaced and well set with white linen. The central light is an amazing sculptural piece of gnarled and polished timber.
I had rung to book. While the website requires a deposit transferred to a local bank account, I explained this was not feasible as a foreigner. I offered my credit card, but Tamara who was looking after reservations was not at all concerned and said simply turn up but please ring if you will be late. This is not hard to do in the madness of Jakarta traffic.
Two suggestions for the owners. Accept credit card guarantees on the website (they accept most credit cards including Amex) in the restaurant and highlight that guests need to bring their own alcohol. The well known Kemang institution of Kemchicks is close by with bottle shop providing a wide range of wines.
The meal, as you would expect from the name of the restaurant, is a 4, 6 or 8-course degustation experience. We chose the six-course option. The menu is available on the website and will not mean much unless you are both fluent in Bahasa Indonesia and familiar with Indonesian dishes. Do not let that deter you in any way! Starting with the Amuse Bouche, a traditional Indonesian custom, each course was explained as it was presented. The presentation and flavours are an experience not to be missed. The timing was perfect. Frequently in Indonesia, the food comes too quickly. The care and thought behind each dish deserved the time to appreciate it.
The intention is to present dishes from various regions of Indonesia with the chef's interpretation of each course. While not familiar with all of them in our view he succeeded very well. It was not as often loosely described as fusion food but interpretative in a very clever and appealing way leaving recognisable elements of the original dishes.
The service was friendly and attentive.
This, as I said, is a Jakarta must and while there are some excellent restaurants in Jakarta, many being in the 5-star hotels, this offers an entirely different experience with a very local flavour which will appeal both to European and Asian tastes.
I recommend this highly and don't forget to take your wine.
I was fortunate to hear about this restaurant from Michelle Matthews who publishes the Luckie Guides to interesting and at times quirky restaurants and bars. Her latest one is on Bali.

An elegant space in Kemang, with a backyard terrace, brainchild of chef Alit and his cuisine lab.

A delightful journey of flavours and sights. I learn a lot about the provenance of the food and lesser known dishes from across Nusantara. Excellent service.

The food was amazing. The staff is incredibly attentive. The ambience is very refined and the food takes center stage by being beautifully prepared. Parking was not a problem and the facilities are absolutely immaculate. This is definitely a stop outside of your normal path and commute to enjoy.
