03 April 2018On my trip to Munduk a year ago, I ate at Warung Classics to see Munduk sunset. The scenery of the bay in gold color, the grand mountains of Java (Mount Raung, Ijen and Merapi), and the burning crimson sky is contemplatively beautiful, peaceful indeed. Then I saw a traditional balinese roof, that makes a poetic sunset. Morrow on, I walked around to find out where the roof is. It is Hyang Lala. I was thinking if I could come and stay there. Here I am at Hyang Lala. I am grateful I can make it before the time steals all chances from our lives.
A small office covered by Irian Flames flowers, an old man stood behind the counter, already prepared the check in papers, done quickly. Hyang Lala is a lovely place in a quiet compound at the heart of Munduk. The room is quite spacious, with a small table, a wardrobe with bamboo hangers, an unused aquarium, and a balcony with really nice view to the green valleys. Down below are the neighbourhood. I can see many shrines surrounded by flowering plants, children playing and dogs running around. Balinese houses are interesting, I wonder how they live and how’s their lives.
The bathroom is probably a response to a persistent complaints from guests. A nice white bathtub, hot shower, and a seated toilet. It is a luxury out of context with the simple homestay.
The lady of the house will ask us what to eat for breakfast with limited option. Assorted fresh fruits and Balinese sweetened rice plus coffee or tea. I always choose coffee.
The rooftop is a dining place which happens to be the best place to enjoy Munduk scenery.
Early in the morning, the golden rays of sunrise light up Munduk town, so refreshing. Morning dews on flowers and ferns feels so fresh. You fill up my senses like a night in the forest, like a mountain in spring time, like a walk in the rain……….
In the afternoon, Hyang Lala is above the clouds. The mist rises up from the forest and comes down from the mountain. The trees on the hills are covered with mist, I feel at peace. The cold breeze blows on my face, I breathe…. Occassionaly the clouds disappear for a while, and the sky is bright again. The poetic sunset paints the coast with gold, colors changing hues in the sky, and layers of mountains makes the scenery feels deeply touching the broken souls.
After dark, i walk the lonely road. Meet with some dogs, weird enough, all are white dogs. Where have all the black dogs gone…
Hyang Lala provides free wifi, breakfast, hot shower, tour guide, transport.
Visiting Munduk waterfall, I tried to sit still at the bottom of the waterfall. Feels like my senses tuned up, elevated and my awareness becomes clear. I cover my ears with my hand and close my eyes. Just sit and feel the cold water on my skin and the loud sound of falling water crushing the pebbles. I feel being purified. "

23 March 2018Arrived late at night, the owner waits for me behind the small office and helped me to carry my stuffs to my room upstairs. The room is pleasant and clean, with a balcony viewing the green meadows of Gobleg and Umajero village. The bathroom is new, equipped with a bathtub and a hot shower. I think it is a bit too much luxury for what they charge. The family runs the homestay and everyone is really nice and helpful, the family still waits for me downstair, waiting if I still need more things.
Hyang Lala is at the heart of Munduk, yet it is quiet. Small groceries shops and restaurants are nearby.
Breakfast is dragon fruits, banana and pears plus Balinese sweets made of glutinous rice, flour and shredded coconut over brown sugar, plus Balinese coffee. The breakfast is served at the rooftop of the homestay, Hyang Lala has the tallest vantage point to view Celukan Bawang bay, Seririt Village, Bali strait and Java. Layers of mountains of Mount Raung, Mount Ijen (in east Java) and Mount Merapi (in Yogyakarta, central Java) is visible from Hyang Lala. The sun sets behind Java mountains and the coastal bay, a poetic sunset with amazing colors.
Munduk town is below Mount Tamblingan and Mount Lesong, so no sunrise scenery in Munduk, the orange fire appears around 7am. However, the golden sunrays touches the Munduk town is really a refreshing moment. Morning has broken…..
From the balcony in the room, the lush and verdant valleys, rice terraces and clove trees are all day free green therapy. In June, the clove grows new leaves, red in color, touches by the sunlight, create an illusion of golden colors. Clove flowers are important commodities for Munduk economy.
In the afternoon, the mist comes down from the mountain, and comes up from the forest. To see the mist rises up from the forest gives a feeling of mysteriousness. The air becomes cold, and Hyang Lala is suddenly above the clouds. This is the most enjoyable moments at Hyang Lala. The mists blurred our vision and obscured everything, and the wind feels cold, fresh mountain breeze. Suddenly the clouds are gone, and then I can picture clearly the sun sets behind the mountains.
Hyang Lala provides free wifi, breakfast, towel, toiletries, and trekking guide (to the waterfalls and Tamblingan lake), and transport services.
Activities by foot: trekking to the four waterfalls (Laangan, Melanting, Labuhan Kebo and Munduk waterfalls), slow walking in Gesing village, Munduk wilderness experience, trekking to Tamblingan lake.
Activities by car: Instagramable Buddhist monastery Brahma Arama Vihara, Banyumala waterfall, Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan, Lake Beratan, Bali Handara (famous for the heavenly gate), Ulun Danu Beratan water temple (most iconic temple in Bali), Eka Karya Bedugul Botanical Garden, Village above the clouds resort, Coffee Kebun at Baturiti, Secret Garden and parasailing at lake Beratan.

" Incredible view, quaint and lovely little village. The owner and his family were really nice and the food amazing. Rooms are pretty basic but worth the price, especially for the small terrace. Special thanks to the guide recommended by the owner who took us literally into the wild on an unmarked path to see the jungle, forsaken rice paddies, coffee plantations and amazing waterfalls. "

" We stayed there one night, it was lovely room with a great sunset view. The breakfast meal is included and it was delicious. The tea and coffee are free any time. The owner is very nice guy, told us how to get to the waterfalls there nearby. "
