AVOID GREAT LEAP TOURS. We had a very bad experience with them. I was staying at the Lime Tree Hotel in Kuching and the hotel offered to book a 4-hour tour of Fairy and Wind Caves through Great Leap Tours. We signed up for 2 people for a Saturday tour from 2pm-6pm. The cost was RM 135/person ($41 USD). A google search pulled up other companies offering the same tour for as low as RM 95/person, but we opted for Great Leap Tours because it was very convenient and the hotel offered to make the arrangements.
The driver showed up 17 minutes late, at 2:17pm and claimed he was stuck in traffic -- this set a bad tone right from the start.
I read online that Wind Cave closes early, so I asked him to take us there first to make sure we have time for both. He agreed this is a good idea and he said that Fairy Cave stays open later. It took about 1 hour to get to Wind Cave and we spent about 45 minutes touring the cave. The guide was good although he did not know the answer to many of the questions I asked about the cave or bats.
We arrived at Fairy Cave at 4:05pm and to our surprise the cave was closed. There was a sign that said they were open daily until 4:00pm. We were, of course, quite upset. Our guide claimed that he did not know that the cave closes at 4:00pm, which I found very strange since Great Leap Tours offers their 2pm-6pm tour daily. Even if the driver had shown up on time at 2pm, there would have not been time to see both caves. We would have had to start at 1pm in order to have 1 hour at each cave. I find it bizarre and unprofessional that Great Leap Tours did not know the opening hours of an attraction for which they offer a daily tour!! With nothing to do, we returned to the hotel and arrived at the hotel around 5:20pm.
I immediately complained to Lime Tree Hotel and the hotel called Great Leap Tours. Great Leap Tours agreed to give us a 50% refund. I was satisfied with the 50% refund since we did still see 1 of the 2 caves, but it's not really about the money -- this was our one and only chance to see the Fairy Cave which is one of Kuching's top sites. I'll likely never again have a chance to see it. I'll note that I was very happy with Lime Tree Hotel and their willingness to help me with the problem. However, if Lime Tree Hotel hands out a flier for Great Leap Tours to every guest, then the Hotel should make more effort to know that the tours are high-quality -- which in this case it certainly was not.
Overall review for Great Leap Tours is 1 out of 5 stars and I highly recommend that other travelers avoid this company.
