The rehabilitated fort is located by the Sarawak River. It houses a respectable collection of historical photographs and artifacts. The building itself should be reason enough for your visit--a glimpse to the past.
I particularly enjoyed the outdoor space--the courtyard and the sentry points on the high walls looking out to Sarawak River and Kuching itself.
Very well maintained and the staff on duty were very helpful and friendly.
Do note though, this site may not be suitable for the disabled and those with young ones in prams or strollers as the site have insufficient facilities catering to their special needs. It is also due to the inherent design of the fort-- the original internal stairs is a narrow spiral staircase and access to the sentry points at the high walls surrounding the courtyard require access by steep hardwood stairs.

A nice Tourist Attraction Place. The gallery is more like a museum talk about Rajah James Brooke and his family coming to Sarawak. A place must visit if you want to know history of Sarawak.

Enjoyed it thoroughly! Since Sarawak Museum is closed for renovations, this is probably one of the best substitute for a brief history of the state under the white rajah.

Fantastic museum. The very unique and interesting history of Sarawak, with a large focus on James Brooke (the "White Raja") and his descendants, is well presented and explained. The fort is well kept and and great sight, but the real interest lies inside with the clearly articulated and excellently presented exhibits.
In terms of accessibility, note that the majority of the artifacts and information are up a spiral staircase or two. Climb the third staircase for the view of the city. Also, currently quite difficult to get to the entrance from the waterfront but it looks like a new entrance is being built which I was told would be finished by Summer 2018. I imagine one could then catch a ferry from the waterfront to this new entrance.

This piece of history from the early kingdom of Sarawak led by the Brooke dynasty is something that should be preserve for future generation. The fort is a 3 storey building with a spiral staircase. Inside you can see the history of the dynasty (swords, uniforms, medals, dollar bill, coins & replica of their fleet ship). The entrance fee for local adults is RM 10 which is reasonable because they needed that money to maintain the place as well. On the outside, you can see monument is erected in the honor of the Brooke dynasty.

An awesome place visit and let the fort transport you back to the late 1800s and early 1900s to see the formation of Sarawak. The Brooke's family are influential in the history of Sarawak.
There 3 levels in the fort for you to visit and an accessible rooftop that overlooks the courtyard.
The courtyard of the fort are surrounded with old canons that used to defend the fort.
There is a small fee for you to enter the fort but all the more worth it to visit if you're ever in Kuching.

This new tourist attraction is a recently refurbished Fort Margherita... The exhibitions of the Brooke family as the Rajah for the olden Sarawak were comprehensive. The wooden walkway was slightly scary, as it's seems not secure.... For slightly well weight person, just becareful when walking.... The old binocular was not functioning... Maybe a restoration may help... Price is justified.

Entrance Fee : Adult $10, Children $5
A fort built in 1879 to defense Kuching still standing strong. It house the history of Sarawak birth. Rule by white rajah for 100 years before occupied by Japanese. Australian army defeated the Japanese but British empire claimed the right over Sarawak.

Really great place to learn history as well as to chill and take nice pictures. It's a really popular spot for pictures because of the really cool architecture :)

Well maintained museum that is easy navigate. No too much content which is nice - only most relevant info. Nothing too impressive though, but worth visiting and snap some photos.

Amazing place to learn the history about the Brookes and the family's legacy and how much of an impact they left. Definitely worth the walk here.

Excellent museum & exhibition about Brooke and the part they played in the history of Sarawak. Some really interesting artifacts on display too. A must go if you are interested in Sarawak history.

Nice piece of history, the fort itself is an imposing structure, a contrast to the Kuching city skyline. Well maintained. However, visitors could appreciate better signages from the sampan jetty.

Really happy that the old fort was restored and made into a museum. It costs to go in and prices depends on who you are, locals ($) are charged cheaper than foreigners ($$). Definitely worth going as it gives you an insight on the Brookes on who they are, as well as their interactions with Sarawak over time.

Going there by foot is like treasure hunting! First you can hitch a ride on local sampans (small boats), then you need to venture your way up through the village then onto the hill. Along the way you will also have a great look at our Sarawak's Parliament Building. The view on the fort is like no other especially during sunset!

RM20 for foreigners.. i must admit we almost didn't pay. The rain helped make up our mind and we were not disappointed.
Very clear and informative museum on the history of Sarawak and the White Rajahs (which i must admit came as completely new information) and well worth visiting !

A little bit difficult to find as the entrance is relatively hidden. Otherwise despite being a small gallery the artifacts are extremely well maintained, the place is clean, & staff is super friendly. Things on display are the personal items of the white Rajahs like photos, wallet, cutlery, busts etc. The fort itself is also extremely well maintained. I don't mind paying RM10 for the entrance. A must-visit for all tourist visiting Kuching!

This is such a nice place to visit as you can see the city view by the river.. However, I'm a bit concerned about the road leading to the place as no signs are shown.. Hope they'll improve it
Iffah Rezali (25/02/2017 09:45)
cross the river by using small boat if you are at the waterfront side. you need to climb up a bit more to reach the destination. historical place and a must-visit place.
James Graham (19/02/2017 08:48)
Take a tambang (small boat) across the river, walk straight up the road from the dock and follow the signs to this interesting and well presented exhibition on the famed white Rajahs of Sarawak.
Basil George Chung (21/11/2016 09:02)
Be surprised what you don't know about our white Rajah until you see the exhibits.fascinating! It's renamed now to Brooke Gallery.
Sheena Gurbakhash (18/11/2016 13:44)
The Brooke Gallery has only been open for about 40+ days when we went. It can be a little difficult to spot because the workmen keep removing the signs. Once there though, this is a sensitive, moving exhibition about the Brookes and the impact they had and still have on Sarawak. The exhibits are interesting and show a very human side of history. You can sense the tremendous pride that Sarawakians have in their unique history and identity. Must see for anyone interested in Sarawak and Kuching's past. On a fine day you can go all the way to the roof terrace and imagine what the city might have looked like in days gone by. Have fun clambering up the spiral staircase.
Paul Gerarts (07/10/2016 03:25)
The Brooke Gallery opened September 24th 2016. It is a permanent exhibition on the Brooke's - the white Rajah's of Sarawak - by the Brooke Trust and the Sarawak Museum. Very interesting to understand the unique early history from Sarawak. Makes a trip to the fort worthwhile with this excellent exhibition. Since end September 2016 there is an admission fee. Members of Friends of Sarawak Museum pay RM 2. Take the sampan from the waterfront across and walk to the fort. An authentic way to visit the fort. The fort - and therefore also the Brooke Gallery - is unfortunately not accessible for wheelchair users. Neither is there any assist for blind or visually impaired persons.

Nice fort, well restored

The police museum is non existent. The fort itself is not fully open. Access from the river involves walking down a narrow path past abandon buildings. Not really worth the effort. Staff at the fort do not speak English.
