This is not the official starting point. Tried to do it ourselves & ended up in the jungle with motorbike. You will be able to climb the mountain from here but the local guys will try to push you pay for their 'guide' services. Also in the dark it's not so safe to be alone in this place

really rewarding and beautiful experience! I booked it through the hotel I was staying at, and I thought it was reasonably priced. The tour guide was very helpful, I wouldn't try to do it without one if you aren't an experienced climber. Even if you are, I don't know, it's really dark (like you can only see a few steps ahead of you and it's steep and gravelly) and the guide knows where to go and can give you a bit of history as well. Wear hiking boots if you have them, I didn't and I was ok, but it'd be a lot better to have them. Also, bring a ton of water, you'll go through it fast climbing up. And wear layers. Watching the sunrise from the top was absolutely amazing. I think it was about 2-2 1/2 hours up. The only thing I didn't enjoy was some really obnoxious Americans standing in front of everyones view to take selfies and being loud when everyone else was quiet just trying to watch the sunrise in peace, but what can you do. Overall it was a great experience.

**WARNING***
***TOURIST TRAP***
Local men passing off as government tour officials, showing a word document created paper and some makeshift tickets, I asked to see his ID which he said he left it at the office.
Wouldn't let us go up the mountain on our own, was asking for 400k for two people. This should be better controlled. I'm happier to pay official park people but not locals who are using it to buy fancy bikes and cars as we have seen. They approached us in a pack and said we can go no further. Very intimidating people. As they surrounded us.

My girlfriend and I brazenly tried to start an unguided climb from here in the broad daylight. The locals were soon onto us and an association guide had tracked us down in no time. We ended up negotiating a 'midday' price for 350k. The trek from here is easy and quick (1 hour up, 45 min down), albeit steep, with loose gravel.
I feel pretty confident that if you arrived here in the dark and quietly/by foot (we were riding up and down various roads on motorbike trying to find this place like a couple of dumb tourists), you'd have no trouble sneaking up this route without a guide. Be sensible, but if you've ever spent two hours unchaperoned in the woods, you won't have any trouble here. If confronted, be polite, you get a lot further with these guys than with hostility. Use a headlamp with red light to stay undetected.

Всем советую взобраться на вулкан и встретить здесь рассвет. Чуть позже утром, как правило, приходят обезьяны и можно потрогать живую природу в их лице руками. После батура рекомендую идти на агунг))
