What an amazing experience, it was the highlight of my stay in Bali as a Hiking lover, you really should not miss it when in Bali and if you love hiking it is a must-to-do trip.
You start in the early morning around 1:30-2:00 when the agency pick you up from your place as it takes almost two hours to get to Kantamani having one tea and coffee stop on the way. Then you get a light breakfast of an egg, bread and banana with a bottle of water (it depends on the package you book if you get a second breakfast or not).
You start the trekking around 4am to be at the top before sunrise, there are two viewpoints but the second one at the top is the best, it is a bit hard to get to though. Mind the monkeys.
Rough trekking, stunning views, great experience overall.

We got a really good deal with this Sunrise Trekk excursion package. For 4 of us, we each paid $290,000 IDR, which included pick up and drop off at our hotel, breakfast, flashlights, and the hike up Mt. Batur. We were told Mt. Batur wasn’t a rigorous, and that it’s an easy steady climb.
So here’s the details:
- our van picked us up around 215AM from our hotel
- the ride is about 45min to an hour to the home base for breakfast. Breakfast consisted of tea, coffee, and Balinese fried bananas (which are so good)
- we load and drive to the starting location for the hike. Where we are given hard boiled eggs, a banana, and sliced bread. Met our guides, was given flashlights, and were on our way.
- This is NOT a beginners hike at all in my opinion, you are hiking with various large groups, on narrow trails, that are extremely rocky, and most importantly it’s pitched dark.
- The hike takes about 2-3 hours to reach the top to view the sunrise in time, I found it increasingly difficult because of the steepness of the trails, and all the loose volcanic rocks we are trekking over. And with the little to no real food to provide you energy for the hike. I suggest others to bring additional snacks that will provide a decent amount of energy.
With all of that, the reward was definitely at the top. It was beautiful, and the view was something I’ve never imagined I’d see. I wouldn’t be able to make it through the hike without the encouragement of other hikers and the amazing guides. They literally held my hand, and gave me as much time as I needed. If you want a challenge with a beautiful view of the sunrise over Bali. Do it.

We took a sunrise guided tour for 350k from our hostel but I wished we had just done the trek ourselves afterwards. The parking area is easy to find and the hike is really easy to follow and not very difficult. We went on a Sunday and there were hundreds of people climbing at 4am when we arrived. It was like being in line at Disneyland going up the trail but still worth the view at the summit. Hike took 2 hours to summit
My suggestion would be to go on a weekday by yourself, however there were a lot of local guides there and as others have said they will give you a hard time if you don't have a guide.

Such a beautiful place/ spot. The place is a really nice to spend sometime looking to the hills and gets overlooked by most travellers. I would suggest to climb the volcano but to also stay in the village and get to know it a bit. The day we been their was raining with dense fog in beginning but soon clear everything and we could she view later. Beautiful natural landscapes and wonderful trail offering natural views. Beautiful natural lake. Great selection of food with buffet in town. I highly recommend to everyone who visiting Bali, Indonesia.

I can recommend a sunrise hike (there are a bunch of different companies that provide this tour) It's a moderate hike up on Mt. Batur where you can see the sunrise. It's seams to be a bit of a gamble on what guide you will get, but the one we had was excellent. Some good shoes (like running shoes), shorts and a jacket for when waiting for the sunrise being all swetty. You will get water, but bring one or two bottles more!

The volcano trek is an amazing experience and a must do if you are visiting Bali. You book through a local tour guide who will pick you up at your hotel/resort at around midnight.
You then go to kintamani from where you will begin the trek. It starts a little after 2 in the morning and you are at the top before sunrise. The sunrise is simply stunning to see above the clouds. Gorgeous views and it will take a while to soak in the view.
Atop the mountain, they give you tea and some snacks. There are small holes in the mountain from which hot volcano gases are still coming out. And they are really really hot. They even cook eggs and make tea with the heat of those gases!
You can try to feel it but you will pull out your hand is less than split second. There is a lake and some flat land at the top from where you can see the crater as well.
You should be back down and back to your hotel/resort by noon or a little after.
Overall it is a fantastic experience and you should not miss it.

Such a great spot. The town is a really nice place to spend some time too and sadly gets overlooked by most travellers. I would suggest to climb the volcano but to also stay in the village and get to know it a bit! Beautiful natural hotsprings. Fishing in the lake. Great food in town. I highly recommend

Great trekking experience. Not a difficult hike to the top. Took around 2.5 hours with just one 10 minutes break. The view of the crater is amazing. You need a guide to take you up. There are lot of sunrise trekking. You can also do the sunset trek but very few people do it.

Nice to see sunrise from top of the volcano. Very busy, so many people do same thing. If you want do it, buy a tour with local companies. It takes approximately 2 hours to reach peak from carpark. Grab a good shoes and jacket, very windy on the top. Amazing experience !

Amazing!
I love this place, highly recommended.
But just some tips from me, if you never been here before and decided to find way not to go with guide, its better to walk behind group with guide, because the track itself is quite challenging and there are few paths that look like the right way but actually not. The guide will help you to pick the right path so you don't have to spend too much energy and time in a wrong path.

An awesome trek. A local guide is required for every 5 (or 6?) tourists. You'll be starting at around 3.30 AM . The guides will provide you with flashlights. There are two points.the first one is the sunrise point which will take you around 1 hour - 1.5 hours to reach. You can either stay here and watch the sunrise or proceed further to the summit itself which will take you another 30 minutes. We succeeded in reaching the summit point from where we observed the sunrise.
It is one of the best things you can possibly witness. It happened faster than we expected. While the trek may not be physically challenging, it is difficult because of the slippery rocks . You wont have anything to hold to in a lot of places. But the guides know this trek like the back of their palms and will help you through the shortest possible route.
After the sunrise, you'll start your descent. You'll find a variety of crops being cultivated on your way down.Overall, it was a fun experience.

Hiked up Mount Batur couple of days ago. Started around 3:20 am with a local guide and we reached the sunrise view point by 5:30. Hike to halfway point is easy if you are in decent shape, but after that it gets a bit challenging mainly because of the volcanic rocks. There is a small hut at the sunrise view point where they sell water, coffee, tea and snacks. Local guide provides flashlight which comes handy as it is pitch dark when you start the hike. Depending on the tour you book they may provide water bottles for the hike and breakfast (banana, boiled egg, bread) at sunrise point. Wear layers as it can be chilly early morning. Sunrise is definitely worth the hike and you will enjoy the mountain and lake views hiking down as well. We returned back by 9:00 am. Our guide was very kind and polite. I believe you can hire the local guide directly without going through a travel company or your hotel. You just need to know where the hike starts.
Definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Bali!

We came here for the sunrise tour and it was absolutely stunning. Be prepared for a steep and stony journey up to the top but once you get up there just enjoy the show. We've had a cloudless morning and a crystal clear view. The only downside is the hundreds of other tourists climbing up there at the same time. It feels very touristy. During the ascent we were sweating but at the top it was quite chilly so make sure to pack a warm jacket and maybe even a beanie. The descent took much longer than the ascent.

Amazing View from the Top! Took almost 2 and half hours to climb, but the sunrise experience after the trek was made it worth climbing the mountain. Really enjoyed it!

We where a group of 7 who went along with 2 guides ( you are not allowed to trek without a guide ) for the sunrise trek. Started at 4.10 reached the summit just in time for the sunrise at about 6 am. Magnificent views followed by volcano steamed egg and sandwiches for breakfast. Do ensure you start early at around 3 am if you are not used to hiking as it gets moderately difficult during the end.

Joined the sunrise trek with some friends. Took us about 2 hours to get to the top, and it was totally worth it! The view is stunning at sunrise, but it was also lovely in the pre-dawn when you could see the stars so clearly.

Great trek to the top of a mountain.
Did the sunrise tour which was well worth it as we really appreciated the cooler weather going up.
We are both fit 20-somethings and did not struggle at all with the climb. It is largely loose volcanic rock and Ash closer to the top which can be quite slippery - especially if it has rained recently. Unfortunately we didn't get to see anything at the top as it was extremely misty but we still had a great time.
Pack a warm jumper as people are not exaggerating when they say it's cold on top.
Wpild recommended a visit if in the area. Jump on a cheap group tour which will include a guide and breakfast.
It is quite busy with tourists on top so don't be surprised by that. We didn't find it a problem though.
