1974: rode Kawasaki bikes to rim of outer crater. Guides took us down the winding trail by Pygmy ponies; took us across lake in dugout timber canoes. Walked up to rim of crater and around part of it. Took the reverse route back down and across lake. By this time, it was pitch black, no moon. We mounted the ponies but after about twenty mins, the guides hit the donkeys and we fell off. We then had to walk blind in the dark up to the top of the outer rim. Then a dark bike ride back to Denpassar. Fantastic day!

A great experience, however you should be fit to Walk to the peak , be prepared and have good rest before you start this mountain hiking
Jack Graham (21/04/2018 01:46)
The walk is worth it, moderate levels of fitness are needed, you can take your time and make it to the first point, go explore the rest of the mountain once you are up there, please tip your guide, even if it's just $10.00, use the bathrooms at the bottom and pack plenty of water, long sleeve shirt or a spray jacket would be also needed once you stop and sit and wait.

A really cool trek up to the summit. The best part was enjoying the Sunrise from high above with the beauty of Mount Agung and Rinjani in the background.

Excellent trek to Mount Batur a famous one when you are in Bali. A beginners trek that will not take more than 2 hours. Trek can be from good to excellent depending on the weather.

Good hike. About hour and half up. Monkeys at the top. Make sure to hike around the crater at the top. Super fun.

Stunning sunrise after (admittedly) quite a dangerous climb in the dark up the mountain. Take your time if you are not very fit and you'll make it up to at least the midway point where you can have a good view. If you are there in time though you can go up to the top of mountain for a grand view of mount Agung. We were 'lucky' enough to see it blow some smoke at sunrise for a dramatic highlight of our climb. It's a adventure worth having!

I have hiked through 2 different routes. The 1st route is quite tough with hand size rocks halfway to summit, make it not easy to step on. But the view is good because it's open space so u can see a lot of stars, very amazing. The 2nd route is easier as it is forest halfway to summit and the incline is not steep.
Start hiking around 3 am and reached summit around 5.30. I experienced the sunrise and it's very beautiful.

If the weather will allow a clear view, making the trip to Gunung Batur is worth a stop. Gunung Batur is an active volcano at 5,600 feet in height, completely surrounded by crater walls. This caldera is 7 miles wide and up to 600 feet in depth.

it has a great view, but so many tourists would be hike at the same time, better go here as early as you can, so that you can have a nice spot to see the sunrise

Astounding sceneries. I can enjoy the sunrise with clear view. Be prepared for the unforgiving steep slopes though.

Great trek for beginners. Very helpful guides. Sunrise could be a hit or a miss based on the weather but the trek is still worth it!

Great fantastic hike. I signed up for the midnight hike through the hotel I was staying at. This place can be a hit or miss depending on the weather. We got lucky today and was able to see a fantastic sun rise with a beautiful horizon cloud covering the lake below.

You have to visit this mountain. I have been here twice and still fall in love with the super beautiful scenery....

A Great morning trek. Awesome views and no terrible sulphur smell

Great experience, tiring but doable. Wear trousers & decent shoes & take layers for your top. If you sweat alot, like me, take a spare shirt for the top & another for the trip home.
The promised 'eggs cooked in the volcanic vent' turned out to be a boiled egg, slice of bread & small bottle of water sent with the guide. So we were hungry later. Take snacks.
Guide looked after everyone really well though & we had a friendly group, so it was a great trip, even though there was alot of cloud cover at dawn. Recommended!

Go early with buddies if possible so you can go to point A or point B or to the top, dont have to wait for rest of people to decide for you
Durgha Murugesan (13/03/2017 17:02)
At the height of 1717m, this is a good mountain to trek for beginners. The Sunrise is spectacular, there is supposed to be a lake below which is mostly covered by the clouds.

Best experience in Bali!
I went twice. A year ago, with a clear sky, beautiful sunrise. Loved it.
This time I went during the rainy season, amazing as well. I couldn't see much but the experience of the wind and fog was amazing

Great view mountain!

This is a must to experience in Bali. Where will you get a chance to climb an active volcano and have breakfast cooked from the Volcano?
