Starting point to the batur mountain. You can park your car or motorcycle here. No retribution for motorcycle. Quite big parking lot

A good place to see sunrise! From main parking we have to walk a long the way and that was taking me a lot of breaths. And the temple is the way to start claiming the mount batur

Trekking mount batur to reach the summit before sunrise was worthwhile. Experiencing the Sunrise after an hour and a half of trekking such a rocky nland steep trail was breathtaking.
A must go destination. Make sure to get a jacket with you as it gets cold up their.
Loads of Mokeys at the crater site too.

Mountain itself and the trek is quite lovely however the organisation running this little operation is quite corrupt, impersonation of a “Government Official” is a favourite as well as throwing whatever they can find at you should you politely decline a guide but be more than willing to make a donation. As they were physically assaulting us, in front of other tourists, they tried to force us into the office. Based on how violent they were in the open, I can only imagine how they would treat us behind closed doors. Myself and my group left soon after to find another area to begin our hike evidently paying for a guide at 700k Indonesian rupee. If you decline a guide you will be physically assaulted verbally abused and followed until you Leave or give in and get a guide. If you have the choice, I’d highly recommend doing treks in East Java instead. The views there are better and you’re much less likely to be physically assaulted for going on a walk alone.

Hiking up that mountain isn't easy but you definitely don't have to pay to do it! Just rent a bike and go there!

Second highest mountain in the Island of Bali standing tall at 1717 metres from the sea level. Very popular for sunrise trek. It is an active volcanic mountain with last eruption in 2000. About 2 hours of trek from the base however it can be done in hour and half or so. Getting the ticket can be a little tricky especially if you haven't booked a tour. Trek itself is not very difficult ,however you have to be cautious. No proper path as such. When you reach the top they serve you breakfast , eggs boiled in the hot spring, could not authenticate that 100%. Well worth it and only few 100 metres away do go see the crater. You can save a good hour if you do so while you are in Ubud that in Kuta and other region.

When we arrived to the parking place the guides covered us like flies, were very agressive and even went physical when trying to force us to accept their overpriced service... we had to flee and start the trek elsewhere

This is a mafia playground. A group of suckers will force you to hire a totally useless tour guide. They will threaten you verbally and physically. The guide you hire won’t only try to take shortcuts but also will run fast and won’t wait for you.. Totally useless!! Apart from the great views up there I won’t ever come back to this place until either the government remove those mafia or hire a more polite ones.
My worst experience with people of Bali!

A crowded but functional startong point for the trekking of Gunung Batur. Toilets are really dirty

Cold weather and stating to climb the volcano at 04.00am to catch the sunrise frm the top of Batur volcano

I am an Indonesian. My suggestion for expatriates who don't want to pay the local guide which costs IDR 200,000 per pax, you can follow the other groups for going up the mountain. If the locals force you to pay, you can say "Maaf, saya sudah ada teman yang memandu saya." which means sorry, I've already got a friend who will be my own guide. If they are enraged and become aggressive, just say sorry and leave them immediately. Don't take their bait.

Love this place. Friendly local.

We did get to see the sunrise but our amazing guide Como made up for it.
Tonik Sujana (30/04/2017 11:52)
actually, this is starting poin for advance / professional and local tracker. if you have no experience and knowledge about tracking mount batur, its better to start from Eastern area (near hot spring).

Far away from professional service for tourist with expensive guide fee 400k/max 5pax and contribution fee 100k/pax. But amazing view and beautiful landscape.

Saw the cartel the other reviewers mention. I went with a guide, make sure you familiarise yourself with your guide as it gets pretty steep at the top, don't be afraid to ask for a break or help as the group has people of mixed abilities. The toilets here flush but have no tissue so bring some with you. Saw a girl pay 150k for 2 bottles of water so bring at least one 500ml bottle, your guide should give you a bottle of water but you never know this is Bali, we expected breakfast but only got a boiled egg and a banana (I laughed because I brought backup food, the unprepared among us didn't find this so funny).

It's really sad that you have to pay 400 000 ydr for two peole to go up.. So we woke up, we came here and we are standing on the parking place and waiting for some other group to go up and have a group discount.. We cannot make it up to see a sunrise.. People here are really agresive. I think it is better to pay some Agent or agency then just come here just like us.

This is the right location to start the trekking, it has the oficial guides. Make sure you bargain and bargain the prices if you don't have a tour.

Hati hati Bali = Sh!t
200K for one person even when it's local - for nature!?
You don't need a guide its not Agung just a easy walk!
I traveled a lot a never visit such a sh!tty country like that, the goverment/mafia want money for every bullsh!t.
I dont understand how stupid the people are who support that country!
Uwe Seitter (02/11/2016 08:00)
Climbing the volcano on your own is not possible. The cartel charges 200,000 RP per person for a guide. If you try going up there without paying they will get physical and agressive. We gave it a miss after being threatened.
