" Adi and his team were recommended to us beforehand and it was very easy to get into contact with Adi via Whatsapp a few days ahead and reserve a date for a trekking tour. Overall, it was an amazing experience I wouldn’t want to miss and still think and talk about to this day.
02 April 2018Adi and his wife welcomed us in an incredibly friendly way and he took much time out for us to explain the tour and the available options. We booked a 3-day trekking tour including two nights in a jungle hut for ~ 120 $ - a great price given the incredible experience.
Adi and his assistant Ian guided us through the jungle in a very professional, cautious, yet very cheerful manner. Ian usually went ahead of us spotting the animals, while Adi was sharing his in-depth knowledge about the jungle-life and the native Orangutan population. The trekking itself is quite challenging in this humid environment (at least for a bit of a couch potato like me) but so much fun! I would definitely recommend long comfortable stretchy pants, socks (to keep out the leeches) and sturdy shoes/sneakers, no flip flops! We took breaks regularly and had little “picnics” with sliced pineapple and watermelons our guides brought along (I can’t even imagine trekking the jungle with a watermelon in my backpack, so we greatly appreciated this effort!).
The rich wildlife we encountered included Orangutans of all ages (wild/semi-wild; incredibly impressive animals), Thomas’ Langurs (very friendly, they follow you around), Black Gibbons, Macaques (they did try to sneak up and steal everything food-related), jungle peacocks, turtles, long termite trails, praying mantis, and many more!
In the evening we hiked to the jungle hut, where we had an amazing dinner (prepared beforehand by Adi’s wife) and spent the rest of the night playing card games in candle light and telling stories while listening to the intense jungle sounds all around us. I absolutely loved the atmosphere up there, I am sure you will, too. Adi provided us with a mosquito net and a mattress and we had a good night sleep, waking up to fresh tea and coffee prepared by Ian over the open fire and ready to start trekking again the next day. On our last day we did a rafting tour back to the village and even saw another Orangutan in the trees along the river. We had so much fun with Adi and Ian – you can really tell that they care about you as a visitor not just as a customer.
The two main differences that clearly set Adi and his team apart from other providers is the very responsible way to treat and take care of the encountered wildlife (unlike other guides they do respect the nature of the animals – keeping a distance, no feeding, no provoking!) and the incredible option of sleeping in the middle of the jungle in a self-built hut (other providers operate a camp site near the river which is apparently quite crowded and not entirely rain-proof).
Next time – if my fitness level allows - I would book an even longer tour with Adi where they take you far into the jungle and you get the chance to see tigers.
I have to say, out of several months of travelling Asia – this was definitely a highlight! Strongly recommended :) "

" Was able to see a Sumatra orangutan, a mother and daughter pair, gibbon and thomas left monkey while we are trekking the outskirts of the protected forests.
29 March 2018Its a bit on the expensive side but offers a better experience seeing these animals in their natural habitat than in a city zoo. "

" Very pleasant stay and awesome jungle trekking. The trekking was professional, all inclusive (the food was just stunning!) and I felt save all the time. Both guides were great and I also appreciated the deep knowledge about the animals and jungle itself.
06 March 2018The place has a great atmosphere, everyone is so nice, happy and helpful. I really like the restaurant, not just the food was tasty, but there are many people coming in, someone always plays guitar and all together it creates a nice evening. I truly recommend it! "

" Had an amazing three day trek with guides Jim and Sardi. They expertly guided us through the jungle where we saw orangutans, macaques, gibbons and the many other incredible sights and sounds Gunung Leuser has to offer.
06 August 2017We were treated to wonderful food, and regaled with tales of the forest by people who not only live-in and love their surroundings, but are part of the very fabric of its ecology. "

" The adventure of a lifetime! Words can't even describe how incredible this experience was. We were a group of 4 and we did the 3D2N trek which was a great length of time. I hoped we would see orangutans, but I had no idea we would get to see 12! We also saw every species of monkey in the area and even a flying squirrel. Our guides Johnny & Leli completely exceeded our expectations. PLEASE ask for them by name! They are amazing. They were knowledgable, conscientious, skilled, friendly and spoke English well. Their first priority was our safety, second was keeping the orangutans and other animals safe and protected, third was our entertainment and comfort, and the fourth was maintaining and improving the condition of the jungle. They were very good at tracking the orangutans and other animals and made a huge effort to get us to see as many as possible. We felt like we were hanging out with friends, exchanging cultural information and life experiences. Seriously, they were awesome & you should definitely request them. Some of the guides we saw from other companies put their groups and the animals in compromising positions just to get closer to the animals. The food was surprisingly delicious and well-presented. We had breakfast, lots of fruit to snack on during the day, yummy lunch of nasi lemak and similar, tea and biscuits in the evening and a large and varied dinner. They boiled water for us to drink at each campsite, but I still recommend carrying lots of water (I'm a big water drinker). The campsites were barebones but safe and comfortable enough. Both were near flowing water which was great. We were able to bathe & swim which was delightful after a sweaty day of hiking. We did the tubing back to Bukit Lawang village at the end which I highly recommend! It was super fun. It was overall a great value and an even better experience. Janine was easy to communicate with and very helpful with all of the questions we had. She and her family are very conscientious and working hard to help improve the jungle. The guides even pick up trash and look for signs of danger for the animals. I can't recommend it enough and I can't wait to go back and do a longer trek! Thank you Johnny, Leli, Dodi and Janine! "

" We had a Great 8 days Trip in September this year! If you want to enjoy nature, spend some Time away from civilisation and the internet to relax and just focus on yourself and the Beauty of the Jungle, than this will be Perfect for you! Don't expect luxury beds or toiletts but the food our Team cooked was just great! Banana pancake, bamboo curry, Fish and of course a lot of Rice, to just name a few of the dishes we had during our Time...
13 October 2016Our Guide Tommy always made sure that we had enough breaks during our walks, so Nobody would feel too tired and during difficult parts of the way he would also assist to make sure Nobody got hurt. I felt safe with him as a Guide and he also knew a lot about Flora and Fauna.
All in all it was a unique experience and I'm glad I had the opportunity to do this Trip! Thanks again to the wonderful Bukit Lawang-Jungle Trekking Team! "

" Bukit Lawang - Jungle Trekking and The We Care Program.
08 February 2016The program aimed to redevelop the villages hit by the flood and focused on replanting trees, waste collection of the debris and getting children back into education.
The program is now focusing on our new school, run by a dedicated team of local teachers. Our aim is to teach children in the local community English, about the environment and key skills with priority given to orphans and the poorer children in the villages.
The new school has opened in February 2015 and is situated a short 20 minute walk or 5 minutes by local transport from the main tourist area of Bukit Lawang. The local team consists of Adi, a senior guide and the teachers Herman, Rini, Fitri and Vida. Check out our website to find out more about them! "
