" Stayed May 9 -12. Single Room with Bathroom was sufficient. All the amenities included (toothbrush kit, shampoo/conditioner, soap, drawer/dresser for clothes, bottled water). Room a bit small and sometimes noisy from outside but I was expecting it and only need a place to sleep at night. Would book again, thanks! "

" Architecture, heritage and culture during travel ranks high for me. The Opera House Hotel with a location and a price range suitable for our purpose was exciting. We were aware of the reviews - noise, room size, cleanliness issues were likely. We viewed these as acceptable risks which we prepared for.
11 May 2018Staff were really gentle and kind, every single one. We had an aunt in a wheelchair visiting us and she was made very welcomed. There is no lift but the help they gave my aunt deserves 10-stars for kindness, effort and speed in solution. Our wine was stored in their fridge, taxis were booked for us, the cleaner was jolly. There is a coffee making stand and several separate common seating areas - perhaps it's an acknowledgement of their very small rooms and their offer to balance things out. We had a takeaway dinner, wine & snacks in the common seating area & staff would greet us when passing. The coffee tables need attention but creaky shutters, shabby old heritage details can be warm and homely. If untarnished perfectly new furniture, sleek lines, noiselessness, clockwork perfection is the preferred choice, there are so many alternatives in this city offering these.
Of course the hotel is aware works, improvement & more focused cleaning is needed. I wonder if their mission is to set up the business to self-fund the development and preservation of an iconic building which is part of the history of a fast disappearing art, all on as simple as possible a set up to start with. I rate the place 4-stars and will return as it's a great cause and am excited at the prospect of it getting into slightly better shape. "

" Lovely hotel. Single rooms as very small and dark. Not good if you are over 163cm tall and don't like showering over the toilet but the location makes up for that! "

" Perfect budget accommodation right in the heart of China town, we stayed two nights before moving into KL. Its what we needed a shower and a bed. After long days exploring Singapore, we were happy to go back to China town, eat and then shower sleep. No complaints. "

" I really like to stay here. The staff are so nice and helpfull. Here in the hotel, you can take free coffee and tea as much as you want.. and also the best part of the hotel is when you go through back door there chinatoen food street ❤ "

" The location is great, the lobby impressive. The rooms are clean but sadly a bit small. Pretty good value for the money however. "

" Nice room, very good location but
18 March 20181. I found a live big cockroach in my room's toilet. The staff managed to clean it for me
2. The cleaner discarded my parent personal's toothbrush, toothpaste and soap from their room toilet "

" Very old hotel, the rooms are very tiny and not very clean, to be honest.
12 March 2018mattresses are from 30 years ago meaning they are very uncomfortable and you feel all the springs nailing your body.
All the hotel area is extremely very cold, like 17° all time when outside is 36º, which get you sick in seconds.
it's not well isolated at all and is very noisy. The air condition in the bedroom is super noisy and old and smell bad due to the filter have no been replaced ever.
We had to ask for a room change, because they try to give us inferior quality category room than what we paid for.
Also the toilet ceiling was falling apart in pieces, because of the humidity.
It's well located and the reception look like nice. but the pictures they published on the booking websites, are like from 20 years ago.
They must do many changes and refurbishments, to improve the hotel quality regarding to the prices you pay. "

" The room is smaller than expected lol. Small bathroom and bed also. At first i thought this place will be quiet but then i was so wrong, i could hear some racket from outside. Housekeeping didn't knock or bell before entering the room lol i was like "what the hell lol?!". This places also doesn't serve breakfast, no big deal for this. Just i thought they could do better on their service. For this price, i don't think its really worth it but i had no expectation either. "

" Location was slightly noisy, but place was kept clean with quite nice ambience in the lobby. Room was pretty small but cozy. "

" Santa grand is located in the middle of chinatown.. the exterior looks alot better than the other hotels in chinatown,so i decided to give it a try. But the service was bad and rooms are abit not in shape eg. Bed is very old and not confortable for sleeping(which is the most important thing of a hotel. And the toilet bowl looks like its gonna break into pieces. "

" Very nice hotel. The lobby is dark and I love the atmosphere in it. Rooms are small, as well as the bathroom. But this is more than enough to do what you have to do. Very close to the Maxwell food court "

" Very interesting!! PLEASE RING THE BELL WHEN YOU COME IN THE ROOM. The bell for the room made my stay here very positively memorable. Interesting room layout also. "

" Would have given 0 stars if I could. Pathetic is an understatement. Room is extremely small. Nothing else positive about facilities. Location is a plus really close to metro and lot of good places to eat out. Staff here is surprisingly good except for the gentleman who was too busy playing games and refused to help us book a cab.

" I used to be such a big fan of Lai Chun Yuen, the concept of a repurposed Chinese opera house is intriguing indeed. However, my recent stay here left me utterly so disappointed that I don't think I'll ever be back. Within the first 3 seconds into my deluxe room, I already saw the first disaster: the aircond was placed along the narrow alley from the entrance, blowing straight at the wall, leaving the rest of the room feeling stuffy and hot despite yanking the temperate and wind speed to the coldest. Next the drainage in the toilet left alot to be desired. The levelling on the floor was done in such a way that water from the shower flows all the way to the wash basin, causing the entire toilet to be wet, and continue to stay wet for a very long time. Then the mattress was of the worst quality that I could already feel the coils within when I sat on it. Lighting could not be worse, with the whole washroom only getting on one spotlight, and an entire half of the bedroom with no lights. The room with balcony unfortunately also faces this recent installation done by the tourism board I supposed which started making some rather irritating noises (their way of attracting passersby) repeatedly from as early as 8am onwards till night. All in all, I could not imagine a worse stay than this recent one, and I hope it will continue to stay that way. "

" My room had a balcony and that was the reason for the low rating...noise issue! It's terribly noisy since it faces the busy food street. When the stalls closed around 11 pm, then came the noise from bars and karaoke. Occasionally noisy drunkards and people chatting loudly to 5 am. There's a lot to like about this hotel, but with serious noise issue. I cannot recommend at all. "

" Great place to stay in the middle of Chinatown. Love the velvet theme decor. Room and bathroom are extremely small but comfortable. "
28 February 2017Alexander Kotys
" Very old building in the heart of Singapore's Chinatown. Entrance hall decorated in red plush, nevertheless a respectable hotel.
11 February 2017The rooms are very small, especially the shower in the bathroom is only suitable for slim persons.
It's ok to stay here for a night or two. Good connection to public transport, only 10 minutes to walk to the next MRT station. "
Yulius Syuli
" The employer is very polite and the service is good, the hotel is unique, and it's locate in the middle china town, only 5 minuets walks from MRT station, and lots of chinese restourants near this place. "

" Ive been there for 3 times. Small room but very convenient to MRT station. Just 5 mins walk to Chinatown Station. All foods are there. "

" This hotel was a surprise, nice position and distinctive interiors "
06 October 2016Nathan Campbell
" Great service. Room is small but works well. Although you can't get beside your bed, you have to get in from then end as there are walls on both sides. Shower is right next to the basin however wasn't really an issue. Pretty quiet at night and slept well although I did request a room on the top floor. Couldn't open windows or shutters so can't look outside. We were only sleeping there so didn't bother us. Probably wouldn't recommend for someone over 50 though as difficult to get into bed. However other rooms are probably ok. "

" Great location amd value for money. Rooms quite small as you would expect. "

" Location, rooms and service are impeccable. Obviously it's an old girl but it serves its purposes. I enjoyed my stay. Close to food, transportation and activities. "
22 July 2016Gary Kramar
" Right in the middle of Chinatown, surrounded by on street stalls and a whole strip dedicated to street food.
21 July 2016The hotel interior is bathed in red velvet, but from what seems like the 1950s - a bit worse for wear.
Super basic amenities with self serve tea or instant coffee.
The room was tiny, at only 10m squared, with only enough room for the double bed and bathroom, but for $100 a night, I can't complain! "

" 3 star hotel small room but friendly staff.. "

" Convinient location
14 February 2016Cheap and clean
Good places to eat nearby
Great place if you use it to sleep at night. "

" Tiny tiny room, but inexpensive. The bathroom was clean but the living area had a little wear and tear that showed. "
10 October 2015Michael Chum
" Don't let the photo fool you! The room is extremely small and cigarette smell is very strong in the room! "
08 May 2015William Buhrig
" Just to let everyone know I am american and tall so when I say the room is small you have to take into account that I am used to larger rooms. Having said that the room is very nice and the service was great I arrived about 4 hrs before check in time and they let me have a room. I did have to wait an hour as the room had to be cleaned first so I went for a walk around the area and there are lots of stores all around the hotel. When I got to the room the concierge had already turned the airconditioning on for me so the room was cool he also took me for a walk around the hotel showing me where I could get free coffee and different types of tea. Over all its starting to be a great vacation. "
