" The Aston Karimun City Hotel was exactly as expected; a bit tattier than the photos on thier website but not a million miles away. It is not an international 4 star standard but nice enough. The service was always good and professional. The room was surprisingly and satisfyingly large and finished to a pretty good standard, it was clean and the bathroom was well equipped. The food served at the hotel was pretty average and was the only real disappointment of the place, otherwise for the money and location the hotel is good. If you're going to Karimun you could do much worse. "

" I'm going to write a very honest review about this hotel. I need to preface by saying that in my whole life of traveling to over 40 countries and 100+ cities, I've never ever switched hotels because I am generally tolerant towards minor issues occurring in accommodations. Aston Karimun is the very first hotel I had requested a refund on for my subsequent night, and moved to another hotel.
05 September 2017Aston Karimun is the largest hotel on Pulau Karimun Besar. It's a fairly decent 4-star hotel with a gym, pool, numerous restaurants including a nice sky bar. My overall rating for the hotel would have been quite good (hence 2 stars instead of 1on this review) but for the fact that:
1. There is a discotheque and karaoke lounge on the 2nd floor which plays extremely loud music until 3am (very very loud so much so the pillows on my bed on the highest floor - 6th floor - were vibrating and I couldn't sleep even with ear plugs) and
2. All the staff refused to admit the music was coming from within the hotel, and gave m dishonest responses about the discotheque. One said the sound was from beside the hotel, another said it was from opposite the building (which didn't make sense because that was a supermarket). I found out because by chance I took a lift that advertised the discotheque and I went to the 2nd floor myself to investigate.
While the staff volunteered to change my room for me, they could not guarantee that I would not have the same level of disturbance the second night - after I confronted them about the discotheque - and so I actually switched hotels for the second night. When I spoke to the front desk manager on duty about this, she apologised for the noise but simply said "but we are an entertainment hotel", to which I replied there's no harm in that provided you can ensure your original business ie. of being a hotel is not disrupted.
My recommendation is to avoid this hotel at all costs - there are smaller and cheaper but much quieter alternatives along the seafront next to the pier. Even if you get a "quieter" room on the right side of the hotel, there's still bound to be disturbances at night because of the sheer volume of the music, and because the disco spans nearly the whole of level 2 and woe be those who pay top dollar for the suites on level 2. "
